Mrs. Hartman returns home to Columbus Street after several days at Gibbons Hospital Logan. She thanks friends for cards letters and gifts received during her stay.
Nelsonville High Greyhounds defeat Gallia Academy Blue Devils 36 to 26 at focal arena. Nelsonville reserves also beat Gallipolis reserves 42 to 13, with Parks, Ross, Fick and Wolfe leading the Pups in a strong finish.
Nelsonville post office substitute clerk Sheldon Powell is recovering satisfactorily at St. Anthony's Hospital in Columbus after major surgery on Thursday. His parents Mr and Mrs F I Powell have been advised. He is in Room 113 and his wife is with him.
Rev. B. A Awe, pastor of the Pilgrim Holiness Church, has returned from a two week revival at Grand Rapids and will preach Sunday February 24 at home church. Services include Sunday School 9:30, morning worship 10:30 with sermon by Rev. Awe, Young Peoples 6 p.m., evening worship 7, all welcome. Cottage prayer tonight at Nate Mla theny Fort St.
The Reverend Sydney Browne, recently assuming duties as priest in charge of the Episcopal Church in the Hocking Valley, will celebrate his first Sunday Communion at the Church of the Epiphany on Sexagesima Sunday February 24 at 9 am. Browne will be introduced to the congregation. Robert Jack will sing Ave Maria. Ray Ashby and Kenneth Orwiler will read the Epistle and Gospel. Browne, born in Belfast in 1912, has a long clerical and military background including service as army chaplain and six Bronze Stars. He is married with a daughter, Dayne Anne, and the Brownes live with the Brooks family on West Columbus Street.
Mrs Jessie Barber, lifelong Nelsonville resident, died suddenly in Cambridge. She is survived by husband Jonathan Barber four children five sisters including Mrs Will Evans and Mrs Goldie Courtney two brothers Stanley Keplar and Donald Keplar. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 PM at Horton Funeral Home Byesville with burial in Byesville.
Hollister Independents upset the Athens All Stars 40 to 27 in Athens. Hollister led 24 15 at halftime and built on a steady defense and offense. Forbes scored 12 for Hollister, Rojeck added 10 for Athens as the Stars suffer a fifth straight loss to the strong Hollister quintet. Teams seeking to play the Tratlister Independents should call 449 1.
Nazarene revival meetings are set at the Church of the Nazarene Adams Street Nelsonville with evangelists Rev Lawrence Walker and wife of Brooklyn NY. revival starts Sunday evening Feb 24 at 7 with Walker preaching each night and readings by Mrs Walker. services include Sunday School at 9 50 morning worship 10 NAPS 6 15 p m.
At the Church of God in Nelsonville preaching will be held Sunday at 2 30 in the afternoon. At The Plains Church of God there is a 10 30 Sunday morning service and an 7 00 Sunday evening service. Last Sunday's service drew a large crowd.
The F. H. A. Club directed by Miss Helen Washburn hosted a Wednesday morning assembly. Johnny Jewett led the color call, Marguerite Locke and Marina Murphy led the pledge and flag presentation, and Phyllis Dishong opened with morning exercises. Performances included Peggy Ann En’s vocal solo, Ann Gibson and Barbara Fou’s duet, a hillbilly skit by multiple students, and a play Henperked Holler Gossip by June Lee et al. Other students spoke, advertised, reported the news, and led a community sing before dismissal by Joann Carter.
Nelsonville residents share funeral and family visits as L. Cavanaugh and others traveled to Zaleski for George O Leary’s funeral. Columus and Sandusky guests visit early week events while Captain Washburn’s family plans in Indianapolis. Local church class meets February 25 and Mrs Juniper assists as hostess. Mrs Brown of Murray City underwent major surgery in Columbus with satisfactory condition.
Gallia County tournament opened in Gallia with Mercerville defeating Bidwell 39 to 15 and Centerville beating Cheshire 37 to 24. Cadmus edged Rio Grande 40 to 37 in the final game of Thursday night. Friday 9 p m Mercerville meets Centerville and Cadmus faces Vinton for finals on Saturday night.
Gallipolis churches list service times and leaders. Grace Methodist with W Scott Westerman conducts 10 am worship and 6:30 pm youth. First Baptist led by J Edward Hakes with 9:15 am Bible School and 10:30 am worship, youth groups at 6:30 pm. First Presbyterian led by Theodore Valenti with 9:30 am Sunday school and 10 am worship. St Peters Episcopal with Charles G Baird holds 4:30 pm service. Church of God led by H M Smith with 9:15 am Sunday School and 8 pm worship. Garfield Ave Church of Christ with Ted Waller 9:19 am Bible classes and 7:30 pm worship. NT Creek Baptist guest ministers with 9:15 am Sunday School and 10:30 am worship.
Gallia County A A A chairman Emory Waugh Bidwell resigns effective February 18. Vice chairman Charles A Logue Morgan Township becomes chairman. Melvin Gilbert Perry Township succeeds Logue as vice chairman and Dan Wagner Walnut Two becomes third member as first alternate joins the committee.
Gallia Academy High School held a tapping ceremony at Thursday assembly for the GALLIPOLIS National Honor Society. New members include Earline Saunders Nelgene McKean Maxine Powell Velma Gaberelli Eilene Blazer Mary Campbell Betty Bateman and Louise Pickens with Ruth Miller as faculty sponsor Line Neal Janet Brown and Marcus Grube named as tapping participants.
Gallipolis notes report the Pre-school Mothers Club meeting at Mrs. Lawrence Gates home with speaker Mrs. Sidney Fadley of Rio Grande discussing Juvenile Delinquency. High School hosts a Wednesday after school tea with Mrs. J Ernest Halliday presenting Gallipolis French background and archives. Presbyterian Women plan a Friday evening covered dish dinner to elect officers and plan readers for the new year.
Gallipolis Civil Service Commission will hold a police department examination Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the city auditor’s office. City Manager J Roy Bartlett reported seven applicants so far.
Rev. Ran som of Central Methodist Church conducted funeral services for Mrs. M. O. Ward who died Monday at her son's Charleston home. Services were at her daughter’s home on Fourth Ave. Pallbearers included Floyd Simmons Jr and Ned Ward. Attendees from out of town listed include Fred Ward of Warsaw Indiana and multiple Charleston relatives plus visitors from Middleport Swan Creek Pleasant and other nearby communities.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Payne purchased the A. R. Noitter property on Eagle Hill and plan to move in as possession is obtained. The Paynes and their two sons have been living with Mr. and Mrs. Donald Payne on Garfield Avenue since he returned from service with Mrs. Payne having lived with the children in Winton during his absence.
The February WSCS meeting at Mrs Charles Bakers Fourth Avenue home lasted all day with social sewing carpet rags and a noon potluck. Afternoon program featured group singing prayer by Mrs Virginia Bane and talks on Africa including Economic Conditions in Africa Exploitations by Foreign Powers and African Babyhood and Motherhood presentations.
Miss Nellie Bell received word that her nephew Major Tom Bell is ill in a Greensboro North Carolina hospital. He served in the war in Italy where an emergency appendix operation was performed. His current illness is believed to stem from the ruptured appendix and a second operation is expected.
In Gallipolis Friday many offices including schools banks State Highway Department courthouse and rent control offices closed for Washington's Birthday. Doris Ward granted a divorce from Woodrow Ward on neglect grounds and the mother awarded custody of the children. Timothy Hogan, Cincinnati veteran and Democratic candidate for Ohio attorney general, was a Gallipolis visitor.
Gallipolis reports Charles Swan son and his Bite Devils on their first road trip since Pearl Harbor. Thursday they face the Greyhounds at Nelsonville and Friday the Bulldogs at Athens. Teams quartered at the Berry Hotel. Boggs eighth graders lost to Weilston Wednesday.
