Veterans of the Third Marine Division poured into the almost stalemated battle for Iwo Island today as dismounted U S cavalrymen fought room by room for control of the Manila Hotel. Counterbalancing these grim scenes were victorious reports from the Philippines theater.
United States fleet near Iwo Jima repelled a Japanese air attack with seven planes shot down. MacArthur reports recapture of Bataan and Corregidor near falls while heavy fighting rages around Manila and Corregidor. Marines push against fortified positions as minefields slow advances and civilians suffer.
Ohio Senate Elections Committee backs a plan to replace the straight party ticket with a single ballot listing all candidates by party. Voters would mark an X for each preferred candidate, altering long standing voting habits and potentially boosting minor candidates alongside major names.
Columbus Gov. Frank Lausche warns he is prepared to issue an emergency regulation to close Ohio liquor bars at midnight starting Monday if the state permits defy the federal order. The State Liquor Board cannot act immediately, forcing the move. In Washington, three Ohioans are among 77 non combatant medical department troops released by Germany and to arrive in March at Charleston from Marseilles.

Logan officers search for Private H W Davis a hotel guest at Hotel Ambrose. The Marine wearing man allegedly stole 300 dollars and a watch from guest Manson and fled via roof fall aided by an awning. Police suspect entry through Manson’s window.
CINCINNATI Lt from Maj Gen Levin H Campbell Sr Army ordnance chief appeals for twice as much ammunition than General Eisenhower has. He says industry is rising to the task but notes a long way to go with a tremendous amount to do. Prisoner Escapes London Prison Farm
Elyria report: Mrs. Sarah Willemson 37 files for divorce from Leo Willemson 29 a South Sea island soldier. Common Pleas Judges Findley and Cook strike the petition as improperly drawn and ordered it stricken. Willemson’s attorney files notice of appeal.
Rep William E Hess of Cincinnati Ohio asks General Marshall for explanation after noting 18 year old soldiers appear on casualty lists. He also urges Congress to consider lowering the draft age while the War Department says training replacements takes at least a year.
London reports Prime Minister Churchill said the government would seek a parliamentary vote of confidence on the Crimean decisions, especially unity of action in peace and war. Eden prepared a motion for debate next Tuesday and Wednesday amid talk of Conservative doubts over Poland. Government spokesmen aimed for broad approval, while a large revolt was feared to threaten Churchill’s position. He assured Allies would consider Nazi bombing by V weapons in postwar terms.

Reports from Bradney's head quarters describe a massive explosion near the Uréttalsperre Dam on the Roer headwaters just before midnight. The reservoir flows into Schwammenauer Lake, now about 90 percent empty, with uncertainty over a possible breach and renewed floods as the Roer remained low and slow up to midnight.
Newark New Jersey former Lutheran minister Carl Ludwig Krepper was found guilty by a federal court jury of conspiracy to obstruct and interfere with U S defense. The government said he aided Lt Walter Kappe a German Army intelligence contact for eight Nazi saboteurs. FBI testimony said Krepper hid German agents but none contacted him. He faces up to two years and a $10 000 fine.
