U S military advisers say Viet Cong forces around Saigon and 11 surrounding provinces have risen to about 65 000 in the 3rd Corps area up from 57 500 a year earlier. Assault troops number 20 000 to 30 000 with thousands operating from bases across the border in Cambodia.
Secretary Shultz told the House Senate Economic Committee that inflation can be restrained with only gradual policy changes. He cited workers in unaffected industries and expanding manpower programs as key factors, while urging focus on Negro youth employment, amid committee frustration at tentative Nixon administration replies.
In Baghdad seven Iraqi Muslims aged 19 to 24 were executed after a three week trial for spying for Israel. Two were soldiers shot by firing squad, five civilians hanged at central prison, with bodies displayed at Liberation Square. A ninth Iraqi Jew also faced display last month.
AP reports a conflict over Nixon administration plans to move OEO Head Start and Job Corps from the Office of Economic Opportunity.
