Viet Reds Fail To Launch Major New Drives In Saigon
U S officials in Saigon say Communist forces have not mounted large campaigns recently due to Allied offensives. About 20,000 armed Viet Cong and North Vietnamese are in each of four corps areas, with 4,500 infiltrators monthly and totals of roughly 100,000 guerrillas, 40,000 political cadres, and 17,000 support personnel nationwide. Depletions and relocations aside, main units are believed to lie low, with some enemy forces moving toward Pleiku and Dak Lak. China’s entry remains unlikely unless the war escalates.
