A half million dollar blaze hit a Logan downtown apartment above the J C Penney store as firefighters from eight towns in five counties battled the stubborn fire. Freezing temperatures hindered water flow while a cold west wind iced over gear as patrolman Stanley Nutter helped at the scene.
Donna Pittman, a Godman Shoe Co employee, escaped a Loh GoowntLo Own Logan OroKe fire with only the clothes on her back and a single pair of holey shoes. She warned neighbors and aroused her roommate, while both Pittman and Miss Rosie Malone lost all possessions and had no insurance.
Warrenton Missouri observed the anniversary of the Katie Jane nursing home fire that killed 72 people. Five wreaths were placed on a common grave shared by 14 unidentified victims. The tragedy remains the worst fire disaster of 1957.
The Little Rock School Board expelled Minniejean Brown a 16 year old Negro student previously admitted to Central High School.
