Cleveland police questioned two men today in the murder of Mike Rokse 35 found with an ice pick in the back on Sagamore Road Northfield. Rokse’s companion John Larkins 29 was shot to death during a Tuesday night grocery store holdup in Cleveland. Detectives believe Rokse was one of two gunmen who escaped the store and may have threatened to expose others in the robbery.
Battalion Captain Russell V. Eastman and Lieutenant Chester Wolfe visited Athens to inspect Battery E, part of the Second Battalion of the 134 Field Artillery. The tour precedes the federal inspection set for March 23.
Paris reports Premier Pierre Laval tells United Press that French efforts to reconcile with Germany and to secure agreements with the United States and Great Britain will continue after Laval’s fall from power. He says progress of the past year surpasses the eleven years since WWI.

The state tax commission approved the abstract showing a decline in Athens County real estate valuation from 26,324,310 in 1930 to 25,074,130 in 1931. The Athens city valuation for 1931 was 8,926,400, down from 1930.
In AKLAVIK Northwest Territories on Feb 18 a lone trapper Albert Johnson died after a 15 hour siege by Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Staff Sergeant Hersey was wounded as the pursuit reached 160 miles from the Rat River, with Captain May observing from the air and a pursuing posse driving Johnson toward the Yukon border.
Athens County Grand Jury indicted Watson on a bad check fraud charge and ordered transfer to Pittsburgh authorities. Prosecutor John W. Bolin cited the death of state witness Fred Guenther and Watsons Pittsburgh connections as the basis for permitting prosecution there.

Cleveland on February 18 reports say New York State Police are examining Harry H. Blagden’s kidnap story "very thoroughly" while Blagden maintains the tale is accurate. He claims an old auto accident caused no memory loss and alleges three kidnappers abducted him from Lake Placid and transported him to Cleveland. Detectives pursued leads noting two Saratoga Springs residents saw a man resembling Blagden in a garage and a second man with a driver in a car with New Jersey plates.
Sanitary inspector R L Marlow visited Jerseyville area production and distribution plants and Athens facilities to test milk for bacteria. Findings indicate conditions compare favorably with other state milk plants. Marlow also investigated barber shops in Athens to guide sanitary practices under a 1931 Ohio amendment effective Jan 1 1932 governing barber shops manicure hairdressing and chiropodists parlors.

Mrs Flossie Kimble 32 bound over to grand jury on charges of throwing her week old baby into Licking Creek. The body has not been found. Kimble says the child’s father urged disposal. She is a native of Athens County.
