In Riverside New Jersey eleven year old Dorothy Kenney fell through a weak lawn cover into a hidden well beside her home. Her eight year old brother Joseph watched as she cried for help. Fire crews recovered her body two hours later after dirt ice and slush covered the opening. Police said rains and snows weakened the well cover layered with leaves.
Columbus reports price reductions on 21 Scotch brands in state liquor stores. State Liquor Director Dale M. Duniton cites lower federal import duties for cuts from 22 to 71 cents per fifth, plus one Canadian whisky, four spirit blends, and a two year old whisky also reduced.
President Truman sent Forest L. Ayers of Murray City to the Senate as a candidate for postmaster in Ohio. Ayers is among several names forwarded for appointive postal chief duties.
Latrobe Pa Zavada quadruplets three girls and a boy entered their second day of life after a Caesarean delivery to Barbara Wagner Zavada 26 a chef and Andrew Zavada 35 father. The four infants weighed a total of 13 pounds and were born within five minutes as Andrew mopped his brow in the hospital waiting room.
Rep. Reid F Murray of Wisconsin claims lifting the tobacco seed export embargo could save nearly one billion dollars in Marshall Plan costs. He cites State Department figures showing 2,000,000,000 pounds of tobacco exports valued at about 911 million dollars under European recovery. Murray introduced reform to repeal the 1940 embargo.
A street corner brawl and gunfire opened a strike by 1 100 Yellow Cab Co drivers in Pittsburgh. Mayor David L Lawrence ordered full police protection for cabs responding to emergencies while union leader George Steding said drivers seek a commission raise from 45 to 54 percent.

Armed service hospitals in Ohio and seven other states will be investigated by a committee named by Secretary of Defense Forrestal. The group travels by plane and begins a first leg of its trip today to study medical problems and make recommendations for better coordination.

Canton news tells of Betty Lee Woolridge a 21 year old who returned from Charleston S C after a rare heart valve operation. Doctors say she won and may lead a near normal life though rheumatic fever scar tissue threatened a vital valve. The operation lasted one hour and thirty five minutes performed by Dr Horace Smithy of the Medical College of Carolina.
