Mercury drops as nationwide coal strike tightens supply. Athens mines idle and only non union coal available. schools face imminent heating limits while homeowners and industries scramble for fuel amid transport and permit delays. Electric plant reports half normal stock and talks of further cuts.
Floods and storms caused at least 16 deaths and millions of dollars in damage across the South Midwest and East. Rivers rose threatened evacuations in Illinois Indiana Ohio and Tennessee as the Ohio and Mississippi rivers surged. Cairo Illinois began shutting industries to conserve fuel for pumping while Eastlake set flooded households to return home.
Lt. William H. Bates wins the late George J. Bates congressional seat in Haverhill Massachusetts defeating Richard M. Russell after being drafted by GOP leaders. Bates had sat out part of the campaign due to Naval regulations but secured a sweeping victory seen as a new GOP outlook.
U S Senator Henry C Dworshak Republican Idaho will speak at a Lincoln Day dinner in Newark tonight. The event highlights festivities and party gathering with Dworshak expected to address supporters and rally donor attendance.
A head on collision near Jackson killed Gilda McCorkle, 20, Oak Hill Route 2, as her car caught fire. Three others were injured including Dave L. Thomas, 24, who suffered a compound leg fracture and head injuries. Mrs. Fred Longfellow, 20, and her husband, 22, sustained hip and knee injuries. The wreck occurred about 12:30 a.m. on Route 75 half a mile south of Jackson. all injured were taken to Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis.
Sixty five Ohioans depart Columbus and Newark tonight to attend the annual 100-a-plate Jefferson Jackson presidential dinner in Washington. The delegation travels in four railroad cars and two chartered buses, with luncheon with Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer, a reception at the Italian embassy, and meetings with Senators Taft Bricker, Vice President Barkley, and a presidential reception. Will P. McKinney of Marietta among the group. Lancaster leads the largest delegation, headed by R. Kenneth Kerr of Eagle Gazette.
Eight to ten persons were believed buried after an explosion at the Hoe Cafe in Portland Indiana. Five people were rescued from the wreckage. One rescuer reported owner Ben Hawkins, former Jay County sheriff, among those possibly trapped. The two storey brick building suffered interior collapse with bricks piled three to four feet high. The site sits in an area recently flooded by the Salamonie River.
The State Board of Liquor Control announced a 30 day suspension of the I.B.P.C. Ellis of W., Scioto Lodge No. 1264 Circleville private club license for selling to non members.
Delbert Spencer is consciously suppressing memory per a Columbus psychiatrist. Dr. Dwight M. Palmer testified Spencer showed malingering after Jan 10 during mental tests at Lima State Hospital. Other doctors noted memory was good earlier, while Spencer’s insanity commitment and retrial followed his 1946 murder conviction near Glouster.
The National Committee for Repeal of Wartime Excise Taxes calls for an immediate $3 billion reduction in excise taxes. It would lift the 20 percent retail tax on jewelry furs luggage and toilet preparations and halve the 20 percent movie tax. The plan aims to spark a price drop and boost the economy toward a $300 billion annual output, while excluding liquor tobacco and gasoline taxes.

Whitesburg Ky two men were trapped in a small truck mine near Whitesburg after a slate fall last night. Rescue teams reached the site this morning and reported both men alive. Consol idation Coal Co safety director M E Prunty led the rescue effort with a team and equipment from Jenkins.
First degree murder charges were filed against Howard Campbell and Eugene Courtney Smith in a Sunday morning stabbing that killed Daniel M. Miller 25 of Gallipolis Ferry. Smith had just been released from Terre Haute prison where he served nine years for auto theft.
John L. Lewis and soft coal operators began peace talks with government mediators present while a full coal strike continued. About 372,000 United Mine Workers members were idle under a court order, with Justice Department ready to act if talks fail.
Ohio Farm Bureau directors report 1949 net farm income down 30 percent from two years prior and note farm operating costs rising. They urge revisions to the farm program to keep prices near parity and criticize the Brannan Plan for relying on government action with limited private initiative. Parity for January 1950 stood at 94 versus 103 in 1949.

Russia agrees to loan 300 million dollars over five years and ends rail and navigation rights in Manchuria by 1952. The treaty binds mutual aid if either is attacked by Japan or affiliates.
A U S Air Force B 29 crashed just east of Great Falls Montana shortly before dawn. Unofficial reports say eight people were killed. The plane had just taken off from a nearby air base and crashed on U S Highway 87 89 toward Lewistown. Details were not immediately available from base officials.
State Tax Commissioner C Emory Glander ordered an immediate investigation of sales tax evasion by Ohio auto dealers after the mid year report showing at least 10831 71 in unpaid taxes in Columbiana and Greene counties. The largest violation involved use tax by buyers purchasing outside Ohio for use inside the state.

A roving group of about 150 pickets forced the 4 p.m. shift to go home at the Misco mine, 22 miles south of Zanesville, as the union mine operated under a United Mine Workers contract.
