Loren Silliphant, 18, son of screenwriter Stirling Silliphant, was shot to death in his Hollywood apartment by an unknown intruder seeking narcotics. His father wrote the screenplay for In the Heat of the Night.
John Eisenhower son of former President Dwight Eisenhower is expected to be named ambassador to Belgium. The announcement may come before President Nixon arrives in Brussels as he begins a five nation European tour on February 23. Eisenhower 46, a retired Army colonel.
James Farmer founder of the Congress for Racial Equality is named an assistant secretary of health education and welfare. The appointment was announced by President Nixon on Wednesday. Farmer had campaigned last year for Nixon's former opponent Hubert Humphrey.
Former Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, 89, is in an intensive care unit in Columbia after a Tuesday admission for an indisposing illness. doctors describe his condition as serious but not specified.
Willie Mae Rogers, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute, named Wednesday by President Nixon as a special consultant to the president. She will advise on expanding consumer protection procedures and will take leave from her current job. Native of Jackson Tennessee.
NASA proposed a billion dollar international airport to be built on landfill in Lake Erie one mile off Cleveland. A cofferdam would protect the facility with runways about 20 feet above the lake. Similar lake airport ideas surface from former Mayor Ralph Lochner. project could open by 1978 with two two mile runways and a three story terminal.

The U S Command says 131 North Vietnamese were killed in two battles northeast of Saigon as the lunar new year cease fire nears. Three U S helicopters were lost or damaged, with seven Americans and 15 others wounded in action. The weekly tally shows 183 Americans and 233 South Vietnamese killed, with 2,264 enemy deaths.
