Ohio lawmakers push measures to abandon the canal system amid vast state finances, projecting a $500000 annual saving. Bills define high school status for college entry, redraw congressional districts, and expand physical education, with other measures on salaries, governance, and taxation.
Three new tubular wells are under construction at Athena city water works, boosting daily capacity by 750000 gallons at a cost of $1000. Bacon Air Line Company of New York builds the wells, with completion expected by May first, delivering water to the existing reservoir. The project aims to prevent shortages and protect the town from future water and fire risks.
Charles W Harris died Friday in New Castle Colorado after years of pulmonary illness. Born April 7 1858 in Clarksburg WV he lived in Athens from childhood and rose from bookkeeper to cashier at the Bank of Athens. He later moved to Arizona then Colorado where he died. Funeral at the M E Church with Knights Templar honors. He leaves two sisters Mrs C R Cable and Mrs A B Richardson and a brother Albert Harris.
Boys and girls across the county enjoy ideal sledding this past week. Youths toddle with sleds and ride from State Street for about a third of a mile, speeding downhill like express trains and steering the curves with smooth dexterity. The longer days and cold nights fuel constant fun as children race and play on the ice.
Miss Elzina McKinstry, 32, died at her parents home on Hospital Atenna yesterday morning about 5 o'clock of pneumonia. The funeral will be at 9:30 Friday morning at the residence, conducted by Rev. W. D. Cherrington. Interment will follow at Hebbardaville cemetery.

Mrs. W Jewell Aled dies at Beebe near Tene age ninety after a long 15 year illness. Funeral held at Hega s Chapel with Bingman officiating. She leaves ten children eight living including Wa Jewell of Merietta and Johnathan Jewell of Big Run. civil war veterans among her sons and father. Community extends sympathy.
Nelsonville will establish three rural free delivery routes by March first. Route one runs from Nelsonville to Kimberly Floodwood and Beaumont. Route two covers Nelsonville Dannville Floodwood and nearby areas. Route three extends west to within one mile of Haydenville including Peach Orchard Star P O and adjacent territory.
The Ohio Oil Company well on the Roden property near Marshfield was shot Saturday and is reported to be the best showing yet in the territory. Land is already leased and further wells will be drilled.
