A steady retreat in market prices paused for a holiday break as prices fell across commodities and stocks. Flexible inflation concerns linger despite reductions by Proctor and Gamble and cheaper pork, beef, and other staples easing consumer costs in parts of the country.
President Walter Reuther of the CIO United Auto Workers is expected to discuss price declines in his address at the 13th CIO convention. Delegates vote on absorbing 69,000 railroad workers while the union grows to 115,000 after adding 25,000 metal workers. A resolution backs the CIO and Philip Murray amid grand jury indictments, and another endorses Marshall Plan aims for Europe.
The Civil Aeronautics Board revised its Great Lakes air service ruling approving American Airlines flights between Cleveland and St. Louis and Parks Air Transport routes from St. Louis to Indianapolis and Champaign Illinois and Chicago. Most other petitions were denied. The dispute touched comments by Columbus mayor and James M. Landis over perceived bias.
Rep Weichel of Ohio urged the federal government to purchase 864000 bushels of surplus apples for use in school lunch and welfare programs. He asked Secretary Anderson to give full consideration to Ohio apple growers.

Ashland area deputy reports Gary Echelberger aged 41 was killed when he used a blow torch to thaw ice from a cement lid on a gas well. The torch caused an explosion that hurled the lid, striking him in the skull.
Scott Wehe of Columbus was appointed a trustee yesterday of the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Home at Sandusky.
The Supreme Court ruled against Muskingum County taxing authorities in cases involving Roseville Pottery Inc and The Mosaic Tile Co. The firms contended their tunnel kilns and equipment should be taxed as personal property rather than real estate, citing excess valuations of 10000 and 113400 respectively.
Common Pleas Judge Ralph Sugrue ordered a public sale of the Ohio Lantern Co plant in Tiffin Ohio. The plant has been in receivership since last December.
In Allensville two youths Amos Dozer Jr and Boyd Tatman told Sheriff William Brown that a pistol swap turned fatal when Dozer's revolver fired by accident. Thomas A King 35 was shot in the head and died three hours later in hospital. The men said they believed all three weapons were unloaded.
Sen McCarthy forecast Congress will pass a long range housing bill in 1948 after talks with GOP leaders. He urged the program exclude government operated or owned public housing and handle it separately to avoid emotional controversies.
In New Lexington the frozen body of Mrs. Viola Corder aged 50 was found yesterday in a junk yard. Cause of death was not immediately determined.

Producers claim ultipara, a new synthetic rubber, will extend auto mileage and strengthen tire treads. Eight independent rubber companies will produce ultipara, with Dayton Rubber Co and Mansfield Tire & Rubber Co of Ohio as part of the venture.
Ohio's Supreme Court will review the death sentence of 16 year old Donald Frohner of Youngstown. Frohner, a high school student, was convicted of first degree murder in the robbery slaying of traveling salesman William Spieth. The court approved the review for possible error after dismissing the youth's appeal that his constitutional rights were abridged.

Troops and police halted a planned coup to topple the Costa Rican government and install ex president Rafael Calderon Guardia after violent clashes begun following the weekend elections. A policeman died and several others were wounded in overnight shootings.
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co reinstated the employee whose discharge sparked a sitdown strike earlier this week. The company also said it will not lift one week suspensions for the 79 workers who staged the protest.
Secretary of Defense Forrestal calls for uniform disability retirement rules for officers and enlisted personnel. He says a fixed disability percentage would determine pay, noting officers currently receive 75 percent of their retirement pay for the rank. The income would be tax free.
