The Labor Department reports a five tenth per cent January wholesale price rise driven by farm products textiles and machinery with cold weather yet to fully hit costs for citrus vegetables natural gas and heating oil. Analysts expect February prices to spike and consumer food costs to trend higher later.
Anthony G. Kiritsis, 44, who held mortgage executive Richard Hall for 63 hours in Indianapolis, is jailed on state kidnapping charges after police seized him as Hall was freed. Kiritsis, claiming immunity, fought the grip and faced an array of legal and psychiatric actions while Hall was checked and released to his family.
Ohio Gov James Rhodes warns ice buildup could trigger the most devastating Ohio River flood in history while River Forecasting Center says flood risk remains ambiguous. Governors from Indiana Illinois Kentucky Pennsylvania and West Virginia convene with Rhodes and Rockefeller to coordinate a regional response and flood insurance push.

Ann Marie Green of Manchester Michigan was awarded a doctorate in arts from the University of Michigan by mistake. Officials say the degree was intended for another Ann Marie Green in a rural area north of Manchester. The transcript arrived by mail to the Manchester family, prompting pride from the Green family and school officials.
