Irving Admits Book Is Hoax

The Associated Press reports Clifford Irving and his aide Richard Suskind admitted to federal authorities that they never met Howard Hughes, the subject of Irving’s purported autobiography. They described a largely staged process while seeking legal protection for Irving’s wife Edith amid a broader probe into perjury forgery and mail fraud.

Nixon Rules Out More Concessions until North Viet Talks

President Nixon said the United States will not offer further concessions to North Vietnam until it negotiates his eight point peace plan. Heaviest Raids Of Indochina War Hit Western Frontier

Hundreds of U S and South Vietnamese warplanes struck a 225 mile western frontier from the DMZ to the central highlands in some of the heaviest raids of the war. U S Air Force and Navy bombers launched about 400 strikes in 24 hours across South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia targeting infiltration routes, staging areas, base camps, and troop concentrations.

Collins Pleased By Indictments Against Collins Mining

State Sen. Oakley Collins expresses support for indictments against the Collins Mining Co. in Cincinnati federal court. Three misdemeanor charges allege unlawful timber cutting, strip mining without a permit, and polluting waters near Wayne National Forest. Staph Infections Rise in Hospitals After Hexachlorophene Ban

The National Center for Disease Control reports 166 staphylococcal infections in 24 nurseries across 23 hospitals, with eight more outbreaks under investigation after halting hexachlorophene bathing. Most cases are mild, but resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics is noted. no fatalities yet.

Karen Herd Miss Idaho of 1971 was the target of a plotted kidnapping and shooting threat. Keith Blaylock, 23, pleaded guilty to third degree felony charges of threatening to commit a crime of violence in connection with the December incident. A threatening letter to Herd promised a .44 caliber pistol and kidnapping on stage if anyone blocked the plan.
