The New Jersey returned from a month off the line and bombarded 64 enemy bunkers south of Da Nang. Over four hours the 56 000 ton ship fired 1 900 pound shells, aiding South Korean marines and killing at least five enemy soldiers.
Washington reports a spring session in Bangkok among the United States and allied leaders after the SEATO ministerial meeting. Discussions likely cover troop withdrawals and Saigon forces taking over more fighting as negotiations progress. Secretary Rogers to attend.
A Venezuelan Aeropostal DC9 with 68 passengers and crew of five, hijacked to eastern Cuba, landed at Santiago after aborting plans for Caracas. All 110 aboard later flew to Miami aboard the hijacked plane, a first in 27 hijacks, prompting talk of a Cuban thaw and negotiated passenger return.
The Ohio Parole Board halted parole for 60 days for Thomas Yonnie Licavoli, the Toledo gangster, with a hearing set for April. Chief Denton cited need for more information and concerns about his family ties to the Mafia. Licavoli has served 35 years for gangland murder in Lucas County.
About 800 protesters crowded the Ohio Statehouse rotunda in Columbus to press for more welfare funding. Highway patrols cleared the building after eight hours as 22 people were arrested outside and released on small bonds. Gov Rhodes met with a demonstrators group but offered no funding solution.
Columbus and Cleveland police departments push for limited wiretaps to help detect burglaries and other crimes. Testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee urged allowing judges to issue warrants for wiretaps in cases including burglary, homicide, extortion, kidnapping, bribery, armed robbery, rape, or arson. Capt. Crown cited about 7000 burglaries yearly in Columbus. Cleveland officials sought expansion to burglary, vice, and receiving stolen property.
A 17 year old Dallas suburbia cheerleader named Janie Lewis escaped after police shot and killed Freddie Mullins 21, the parolee holding her at Big Town shopping center Mesquite. About 500 onlookers witnessed the tense outcome as Mullins tried to threaten her with a pistol before being fatally shot.
In Southport England 77 year old Florrie Ball nicknamed Granny Ball laments losing motorbike freedom after insurers refuse coverage. At 4 feet 10 inches and 84 pounds she insists she can ride as well as any youngster and loves the air, car travel not the same.
