Economists cautioned shoppers not to be overly optimistic about lower meat prices as wholesale livestock gains and grain rallies suggest a limited or temporary decrease. Some stores cut prices on bacon and flour while hog prices slid but remain uncertain for lasting relief.
Severe cold grips Ohio as the worst 30 year ice jam on the Ohio River menaces about 2 million dollars in shipping in Cincinnati harbor. Ten towboats and many vessels face possible damage from breaking ice while gas shortages idle thousands of workers across Dayton Canton and the Mahoning Valley.
A draft 45 article statute proposes a permanent international police force for the Jerusalem zone of partitioned Palestine. A six nation committee would have a U N appointed governor to run the force and govern the city with a legislative council and judiciary. The governor would be chosen from outside Palestine for three years and would guard holy sites. Citizenship would be exclusive to the city.
In Newcastle area a pit pony with alleged halitosis caused 150 coal miners to walk off the job. miners and management reps disagreed over the odor claim. The Daily Mirror reported the offer to replace the pony or mix musk with the chaff. The miners have not yet decided.
An informal Athens survey found few price reductions despite speculation. Retailers warned wholesale cuts will not hit shelves until stocks run down and replacements priced higher. Some bread and ham discounts appeared but officials said any change is temporary and seasonal, with one independent grocer calling national accounts propaganda.
State Sen. Roscoe Walcutt named a special committee to draft 1949 General Assembly legislation creating a single conservation and natural resources department led by a cabinet level director. Sen. C. Stanley Mechem will head the panel with members Dr. Co. L. Dow of Ohio University and Bryce C. Browning of Muskingum conservancy district assisting.

Anton Zirngibl the director of Dachau Internment Camp has been relieved of his position as German authorities tighten security at camps holding Nazis and suspected or convicted individuals. Fritz Kuhn escaped from Dachau a week earlier prompting the shakeup.
James Wheeler aged 22 was held on a first degree murder charge in Sandusky Ohio after the killing of 21 year old Charles H. Grissom Jr in a downtown tavern last Sunday.

Ron ald Arbaugh a 26 year old coal trucker living on Route 75 south of McArthur near Bethel Church was shot in the head by a .22 caliber pistol yesterday. He lies in serious condition at Veterans Hospital Chillicothe after emergency treatment by Dr. E. T. Sager and transfer by Heistand ambulance. Authorities say the weapon was in his own hand and the shooting may have been accidental. Arbaugh is an Army veteran of World War II, married with one child. His parents live nearby.
In Anderson South Carolina the Ku Klux Klan sought a parade permit from the city council but was denied. Mayor J L Sherard declared no one wearing masks would march. Alderman James Cathcart blamed political big shots in Washington for stirring trouble in the South.
Burley tobacco sales in Kentucky totaled 761,126 pounds for 337,310.20 dollars across five markets. The average price was 44.32 dollars per hundredweight, up 2.17 from last Friday, with volume similar to the prior week.
Mrs. Bernice L. Watson, 23, of Newcomerstown, held in county jail as material witness in the slaying of Walter L. Middlemus, 25, itinerant farmer. Middlemus body found in Alum Creek December 26, 1946, with skull fractured in three places.

Negotiations stalled after the union sought a 40 cent hourly raise from the Philadelphia Transportation Company.
