The government plans to lift the freeze on retail prices for men and women’s clothing cosmetics furniture rugs lamps pots and pans. OPS will limit margins between wholesale costs and consumer prices to permit controlled increases while aiming to ease retailer costs.
Washington reports party leaders and former President Hoover back a plan to ship two million tons of U S wheat to famine struck India. Truman expected to issue public backing and meet foreign policy leaders, though no authorizing bill has been introduced yet.
The nine day rail shutdown neared end in most regions as more switchmen returned to work nationwide. Chicago remained far from normal with about one fifth of rail crews active on 25 carriers, delaying cross country traffic and complicating a wage dispute with four unions. President Truman accused strikers of breaking an agreement and ordered Army action if needed to restore full rail operation while the National Mediation Board pressed for settlement in Washington. A Laurel Cliff eight room frame house owned by Mrs. Will Carman burned to a total loss at 2:30 a.m. The Clay family Lando and Mrs. Clay with Ruth Ann 15 and Ronald 12 escaped unharmed and are staying with Rev. Leroy Hiett. Fire Chief Henry Werry said a defective flue likely caused the blaze.
In Columbus a bill to ease traffic bottlenecks on Ohio River bridges seeks authority for the State Bridge Commission to reimpose tolls on freed bridges to fund new approaches repairs or new construction. Rep Clarence L Wetzel cites the Steubenville and East Liverpool bridges as priorities and notes the Ohio side traffic is very difficult.
Dr Raleigh Henry Pickard, 28, a U S trained physician educated largely at government expense, refuses to register with his Berkeley California draft board. He declares registration for war is wrong and the government orders his arrest as he studies to be a Methodist missionary.
State Senator C Stanley Mechem Republican Athens proposes strengthening the sales tax to close leaks and avoid a gross receipts tax. He says audits could raise about 10 million annually, cut collector commissions to two percent, tax private auto sales, and end paid stamp agents, aiming to boost revenue substantially without a gross receipts system.
A U S Marine on leave fatally shoots his estranged wife in Grosse Pointe after police storm a barricaded bedroom door at midnight. Pvt Albert Larter Daly, 23, seized the moment to plead for talk before firing a shotgun blast. he then surrendered, later admitting the plan to kill and die together in a staged fatal scene. Authorities labeled his claim of accidental shooting a fabrication. Daly had eloped with Virginia Hebb Daly, 22, and recently faced divorce proceedings.
Earl Neal Shaw 56 prominent Hocking County Mason dies at home near Union Furnace after mistaking rat poison for penicillin from a bathroom cabinet bottle. Logan physician says he swallowed about a teaspoonful. hospital transit failed due to zero temperature. Shaw, a mail carrier active in Logan Methodist Church and Miller Chapel Grange, faced retirement. Continued on Page 6.
PORTSMOUTH A jury of 12 men deliberated two hours last night before finding Earl G Stevens of Lucasville guilty of first degree murder. Stevens was convicted of the hammer slaying of James H Walker 45 of Frazersburg Muskingum County at the Stevens home last $27. The jury recommended mercy making a life sentence mandatory. Stevens pleaded self defense but the prosecution charged he killed Walker to rob him of $100.
In Hillside Memorial Park near Inglewood a 15-foot high marble monument will honor Al Jolson at an overall cost of 84,000 dollars drawn from Jolson's 4 million dollar estate. The singer's body will rest in a sarcophagus near a rotunda as a 120-foot cascade feeds a pool beside the monument.
An Erie freight train struck a station wagon near Warren today killing four persons. A survivor reported the impact occurred as the wagon crossed the tracks, creating a fatal accident scene with local authorities investigating.
An explosion at Atts Crankshaft Inc in Fostoria killed four men and wounded four others. Fire officials suspect propane gas contributed though the exact cause remains unknown. The building contained propane and no fire followed the blast. Identities of victims were not released.
William W. Remington, a former government economist, faces sentencing after a federal jury found him guilty of perjury for denying membership in the Communist Party. He could receive up to five years in prison and a $2000 fine. The verdict was delivered by a seven women and five men jury after last summer’s grand jury testimony.
New York traders say the liquor industry can meet larger defense alcohol orders without harming civilian supply. Officials report the government has issued only small requests for alcohol so far this year.
