Messenger Circulation Is Explained by The Messenger Manager

Fred W. Weber, circulation manager, explained the complex duties of a modern daily’s circulation to Athens Rotarians. He noted over 200 youths earned more than 60 thousand dollars last year, with a carrier average of 5.25 dollars weekly, nine trucks logging a quarter million miles, and a million and a half pounds of paper carried across 660 miles of district routes. In emergencies, higher trucks, boats, and even railroad handcars were used, while James M. Vercoe and Norman Saylor led distribution and maintenance staff. The Messenger loads hundreds of bundles and thousands of papers each hour before presses roll, with officials named for mail accounting and carrier supervision. Weber, born in Athens and once a carrier, highlighted growth from 10 thousand subscribers to today’s total, and noted his leadership roles in the Ohio and international circulation communities.
