Washington reports the War Labor Board may act this afternoon to end the Seattle strike. Seattle officials deliver a flat ultimatum to the general strike committee offering government aid to essential enterprises if the strike is not called off by 8 am Saturday.
The big four railroad brotherhoods proposed government ownership with a joint operation by the government workers and railroad officials. They outlined a 4 percent guaranteed return, a government controlled operation corporation, and profit sharing with the government receiving half the net revenue.
An automobile stolen in Chauncey Thursday evening was recovered within hours. Two youths from Nelsonville and Chauncey were jailed Friday forenoon on suspicion of taking part in the theft. Duncan McDermott and a boy named Breaker faced detention after a chase ended with the car tied up in Nelsonville.
Seattle, Washington, on February 7, remained remarkably peaceful on the second day of the general strike. Police logged 24 minor arrests since yesterday noon, while preparations at headquarters expanded to a massive scale with night sticks and guns issued to volunteer patrolmen. By midday over 3,000 special police were ready for instant call as water and light utilities were secured by combined police, soldiers, and sailors.
Major John F. Morrison heads to Seattle to assume command of regular army forces on strike duty. Troops from Camp Lewis await orders as Seattle faces a general strike with no violence reported yet. Streetcars and jitneys halted, utilities guarded, city life largely deserted, and demobilization efforts underway as authorities consider federal intervention.
EAST SHIPYARD 6: A shipyard strike at the Merchant shipbuilding corporation plant Harriman Pennsylvania near Bristol ties up the Delaware river yards. About 8 000 of the 10 000 employees walked out leaving only wood workers and office forces.
Butte Montana February 7 copper miners in the district will meet at seven o'clock to vote on a strike proposal. The five organizations are participating in the vote. The outcome could affect local copper production and labor relations.
In Salt Lake City and surrounding areas miners face a $1 per day wage reduction effective immediately. Union officials protest while miners adapt to the lower pay as production continues at the Bingham mines.
February 7 marks a record discharge at Camp Sherman as 2,010 soldiers are mustered out in a day. To offset the loss 2,400 new men arrive from other cantonments tonight and tomorrow. Surgeons urge soldiers on duty to aid wounded heroes overseas. Military class seeks Edward Allie and Frank Barfield, both from outside Ohio, who left detention camp last night after a break-in at a camp garage.
Officials of the anti saloon league urged the house judiciary committee to enact a new law enforcing war time prohibition this session. Prohibition forces hope the machinery will be made permanent when the constitutional ban takes effect next January.
In New York on February 7, Richard De White Hudson, 44, a sales, leaped from a thirteenth floor window of the Woolworth Building. He died from the plunge. Authorities investigated the incident as a suicide.
Mrs H Stegkemper wife of deputy Shen Er nest H Sheeran delivered 8200 in cash to E J Hanrratty claiming to settle any shortage in her husband's books. Stegkemper has not held office for a month and is said to be in a sanitarium.
Five transports carrying about 6600 men sailed from France on February 4 to New York and Newport News. Mercury carries the 69th regiment and several Army and Navy units. Huntington sails Brest to New York with multiple Camp Dix units and casual companies. Heredia from St Nazaire and Nazaire to New York carries hospital detachments and officers. Verane bound to Newport News expected February 16 with remaining detachments.
In Weimar on February 7 Chancellor Ebert opened the national assembly calling it the sovereign power by which the German people will have self rule. He said the war was lost by the Kaiser and his government as delegates entered a formal session contrasted with the festive theatre setting.
Senator Davis Mahoning county introduced a bill to day that would allow corporations to incorporate in Ohio without fixing par value on their common stock. The Whittemore bill would permit extension departments for Ohio University Miami University and the state normals at Kent and Bowling Green.
American army officials in Germany crack down on propaganda among troops with heavy fines. A Catholic priest was fined ten thousand marks for reading propaganda in church, another German two thousand marks for cursing French before Americans. Germany sent ten million marks as part payment of occupation costs, with twenty million more on the way.
John Courtney of Marion, a former Athens boy, arrived on the Asiatic with part of the 83rd division casuals. He spoke with old Athens friends at the depot about seeing John Dana and Lieut Gilbert McDougall in France, both said to be well.
The chamber expresses a wish to cooperate with the Ohio University to support students who are involved in school matters. It emphasizes student responsibility and cooperation with local institutions.
In Washington on February 17 a report notes eight-hour bombardment and a German named Bosche involved in a legislative matter from South Omaha. Frencher Heney, a senator, is cited in connection with committee letters and efforts related to the Illinois event.
Three boys under eighteen were arrested by the city police after fleeing their Thursday homes. A Harley Davidson belonging to Everette and tarpaulin of Frea Lee Tom disappeared. Chief Porter traced them via state routes and towns, and they were found in Jackson. Names withheld. They may be arraigned in juvenile court Saturday.
A report notes the pumping operation at the hospital site will run with a power line now set to the water station. Plans include buying Bishop Moore bottom near ground for farm use, currently owned by J P Y. Two trucks for the institution will be requested.
