Wilbur Murray said the death was self-inflicted as Gilbert telephoned Ruth B. Goodrich to end engagement and seek reconciliation with his former wife, mother of his three children.
In Washington the banker J P Morgan argued during the Senate munitions inquiry that destroying the leisure class would destroy civilization. He defined leisure as families able to hire help, noting many mothers with many children lack time for education. He estimated about 30 million American families fit the definition.

In Davos Switzerland a Yugoslav medical student confessed to killing Wilhelm Gustloff the 40 year old Nazi leader in Switzerland. He claimed to act to avenge Jews harmed by Germany and said Hitler should have been hit. Swiss authorities described Gustloff as a militant organizer attracting anti Nazi protests.

He said she violated a governing principle by ordering Lorain County to hire a set number of paid investigators at the county children’s home and threatening state approval withdrawal if not complied with.
New York police sought two men for an attempted robbery at Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney's Long Island estate. They discounted reports that an earlier attempt involved kidnapping her 11 year old granddaughter Gloria Vanderbilt.
