Thousands of Negro and Puerto Rican students join a one day protest demanding total integration. An AP tally puts participation at about 262000, roughly 65 percent of minority pupils in New York City schools.
Space scientists study coded tapes after Ranger VI crashed on the moon with cameras failing during a 66 hour flight. Despite the failure, Ranger VII is planned as an identical mission to gather lunar data for future manned landings. Total program cost reaches $168 million.
U S officials plan to press Paris for details of Charles de Gaulle’s proposed neutrality treaty for Southeast Asia and his stance on Red China. Johnson aides fear if the plan targets South Vietnam now it could spark serious trouble, while De Gaulle links neutrality to ending foreign intervention and involves Red China.
Senate leader Everett Dirksen and House chief Charles Halleck ruled out any political truce after President Johnson urged a mudslinging ban. Dirksen said it would be unheard of and Halleck cited polls as evidence he would seek a truce if ahead. Nixon to speak on foreign affairs at Pfeiffer College.
Louisville resident Fred Hastings, 29, was seriously injured after a 5500 foot fall during a field jump with the Kentucky Parachute Association at Seymour Indiana. A reserve chute briefly opened and saved him, though the main parachute failed to deploy properly entangling with the reserve. James Tittle, who watched from the ground, said Hastings planned a 20 second free fall before pulling the cord at about 3000 feet.
An Ohio University student Douglas Knapp 20 Cleveland Heights fell 60 feet at Old Man's Cave landing on ice and breaking multiple bones. He was treated at Hocking Valley Hospital then moved to University Hospital Columbus. A separate note reports Daniel Tanner 28 charged with first degree manslaughter in a Columbus shooting.

Two Viet Cong guerrillas were killed and a U S officer wounded in the first Viet Cong raid on an American compound since the war began. Four guerrillas breached the fence at Kon Tum as a grenade exploded in a room, starting a fire. An American sentry, Spec. 4 Dale D. Flinn, 24, of Fowler Kansas, fired on the attackers. Nine Vietnamese guards assigned to the eight-building post were absent without leave, triggering an investigation.
Columbus reports petitions filed for the May 5 primary. Democratic candidates include incumbent Stephen M. Young and John H. Glenn Jr. Republican contenders are Robert Taft Jr. and Ted W Brown. Glenn highlights space fame. Taft is grandson of William Howard Taft.
Two U S Navy men from Ohio Lt John F Welsh 29 and Aviation Electronics Spec Thomas E Barton 38 were killed near Cadiz Spain while trying to save their six year old sons Patrick and Dennis from an oncoming freight train. The boys Patrick and Dennis were injured and the mothers and sisters in a following car reached the scene after. Naval officials at Rota said the families were en route to a local festival. Both fathers died at the crossing while attempting to shield their sons.
UC students plan to seek permission from the Speakers Screening Committee to host Gov. George C. Wallace on February 11. Wallace, a segregation and states rights advocate, is already speaking in Cincinnati that night and may attend a UC event. His Ohio primary candidacy decision was announced as he holds a Columbus news conference on February 12.
