General Pershing authorized to discharge men for illness or family distress. Soldiers or their relatives can request by letter or cable. The measure enables immediate homeward discharge for eligible personnel.
The Agamemnon arrived in New York with nearly 3000 American soldiers including 1625 from the fifty-first coast artillery corps and 38 officers among a total of 3111 personnel. The ship also carried 668 sick and wounded, 130 bedridden, and 1 officer. The Samarinda also docked with casual units from New York and Georgia.
Eight American soldiers were killed and thirty injured when a troop train collided with two German locomotives en route from Chaumont to Brest. The troops were to depart Brest for the United States.
Columbus February 3. The state penitentiary commission will meet to question Auditor Donahhey about plans to rush the prison program. Donahoe favors a London prison farm with cottages but opposes closing the Columbus penitentiary and building a new London facility. He says the plan would save Ohio several million dollars. Commission members say prison policy is decided by the legislature and Donahoe has no right to intervene.
Detroit papers report Henry Ford seeks 1 million dollars from the Chicago Tribune alleging libel. Attorneys claim Ford earned tremendous profits during government work and would present evidence comparing him to profiteers in the period.
Lieut. John Arthur Logan son of Mr and Mrs Earl C Logan a lifelong Athens resident was in Athens on the way to Cleveland to visit his parents and then to Camp Sherman for treatment after a 2600 foot plane fall. He wears a neck cast reduced in size and is in high spirits despite his injury.
Milton Russell formerly with C. O. Moore grocery and meat market and now a manager for a chain in Akron was badly injured in a late Saturday auto crash. A telegram to his sister Mrs. Roy Shirley said his condition was unchanged. Details are unclear but expected soon.
Walker D. Hines director general of railroads told the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee that government control must be extended at least three years or ended now. He proposed a three year extension as a compromise amid opposition to Mee. 100s five year plan and urged a five year test with private operation under strict regulation and profits guarantees. He warned a sudden return could cause chaos and said existing laws can preserve rates if control ends.
In Marion Ohio on February 3 George Washington Warner a colored man who had been jailed for assault was the target of a mob of about three hundred aiming to take him from the county jail and Mount Gilead. Sheriff Al l om resisted and Warner was moved for safety while deputies arrested several loiterers and saloons were ordered closed.
Police searched a Jackson lake four miles from town for five skaters who disappeared after entering open water while skating. Two bodies found were identified as Leon Watts and Miss Mary O C Probert. missing are Ralph Watts Miss Lucile Adams and Percy Richardson.
William W. Thompson, 12, was arranged in children’s court on an accidental homicide charge. A revolver he was playing with fired, bullets lodging in his mother’s breast. His father serves in Germany with the American army.
New York Feb 3 Jack Kearns manager of Jack Dempsey denies Fred Fulton's charge that Dempsey treacherously knocked him out of their bout in Harrison New Jersey after agreeing to only box an eight round exhibition Kearns calls Fulton's attack a trick to smear the Willard Dempsey fight.
