President Nixon asks Congress for expanded job creation and business growth in 1971 while rejecting price wage controls. He cites unemployment near 6 percent now with a goal to about 4 percent by mid 1972 and inflation near 3 percent, plus a national output around 1.065 trillion dollars for 1971.
The Associated Press reports Ohio and several regions hit record low temperatures with six below in Toledo Cleveland and Youngstown next to Akron four below while Cincinnati reached one above zero. Highs expected five to fifteen degrees with widespread subfreezing readings and Arctic conditions pushing south toward Louisiana Georgia and Mississippi.
Apollo 14 astronauts search for a docking problem threatening Fra Mauro landing. Shepard Mitchell and Roosa test a linking mechanism for over an hour using hand latches, with no failure, and plan further troubleshooting overnight. If docking fails they may shift to an orbital mission.
Gov Nelson A Rockefeller urges a record 1.11 billion in tax increases to finance an 8.45 billion state budget blaming federal revenue sharing delays. Berlin reports easing of harassment on routes to and from West Berlin. Traffic on the autobahn returns to normal with signals mostly green after six days of red cycles. In Saigon, U.S. Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker left for Washington to confer with President Nixon and officials.
At the 154th annual Episcopal Diocese of Ohio convention in Cleveland delegates adopted a resolution calling for repeal of Ohio abortion laws after a spirited debate over the word repeal versus liberalize. The repeal vote stood 240 to 80.
London reports a 20 000 strong Ford walkout across 21 plants over a pay dispute amid a postal strike that halts mail and telegraph service. Officials expect the postal strike to continue a week, while rail workers seek raises up to 25 percent, challenging government limits.
Ohio Governor John J. Gilligan will visit Athens on Friday for a public meeting with Appalachian Ohio leaders from 28 counties to discuss opposition to any plan by the Nixon administration to shut down the Appalachian Regional Commission. The event at an Ohio University hall will include senators Taft Saxbe and regional representatives.
President Nixon faces a stalled rail labor dispute with no settlement in sight. Congress must receive a report by Feb. 15 and act by March 1 when the strike moratorium ends. Union demands include a three year contract with about 40 percent wage gains and a cost of living increase.
