In court the official measurer, questioned by counsel, denies the statements attributed to Eckhart. The testimony centers on prior measurements and related claims.
In Columbus Buckley testifies he knew telegrams signaling raids at Jackson Brewery were unlawful but says Eckhart suggested a tip-off system for protection. He denies mentioning Senators Fess and Myers Y. Cooper by name to Eckhart and rejects insinuations of bribery plans.
In Nelsonville on February 1 a coal wagon coasting incident near the village water trough left Charles Ball the eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Allen Ball of Buchtel with a fractured skull. He jumped from the wagon and crossed the road in front of an oncoming truck driven by a Murray City man and died about a half hour later at Dr A K Walker's office. No blame was attached to the truck driver. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
President-Elect Herbert Hoover considers staying in Florida until just before inauguration to avoid attention on Coolidge's departure. He plans to return mid February to handle inaugural affairs while his assistant and RNC officials fish Biscayne Bay, touting a 45 pound sailfish catch.

Athens County begins collecting the first half 1928 taxes today announced by County Treasurer Rafael Johnson. Taxes on real property must be paid by March 20, 1929 to avoid penalties. after that date penalties will be assessed on all taxes collected.
The Rystedt Aircraft Company has acquired 40 acres of the Ruff Farm east of Lancaster for an airport and assembly plant. A new type helicopter will be built there, officials announced.

Mrs Helen White, 30, was jailed on $5,000 bond as police investigated the shooting of Everett Murphy, 28. She admitted that during an attempt by Murphy to force his way into her apartment she fired, claiming self defense after leaving the unit, with alcohol cited.
