Roxanna Rupe Leads Coolville Public Library Role

Roxanna Rupe, branch manager of the Coolville Public Library in Athens County, says she is Athens County and has lived there 48 years. She started 14 years ago part time in Coolville, with hours in the Athens Branch before becoming manager. Her favorite book is My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. She enjoys reading, sports, yard work, and exercising and recommends biking from Athens to Nelsonville. She notes a desire for better jobs with advancement opportunities and cherishes the hometown feel and chance encounters with old friends.

Court denies reconsideration and sets new trial date in Kharabe case

Judge George McCarthy denied the motion to reconsider the suppression ruling in the case of Amos Kharabe, 42, of Dublin, granting a continuance. The new trial date is April 5 with a final pretrial on March 7. The 21 original charges from 2014 include alleged child pornography, while a 2015 indictment adds a count of receiving stolen property for a Hewlett Packard laptop. The case links to a 2013 search warrant at Kharabe’s Athens apartment and involves pandering obscenity and related charges. The defense sought the delay partly due to the new charge. prosecutors did not oppose joinder of cases.

Elections board office closed Thursday

The Athens County Board of Elections office will be closed on Thursday. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. at the board office. Albany areas report school and zoning items with cancellations and reorganizations.

Deputies go above and beyond to help those in need

Athens County deputies trained to carry Narcan used it on Christmas Eve to revive an overdosed individual at Green Meadows Trailer Park Chauncey. Sheriff Smith praised the team for exceptional first responder efforts during two holiday weekend calls including a suicide attempt scene on River Road with CPR and rescue actions.

Recycling Schedule for Glouster Buchtel and New Marshfield

Athens County residents may drop household recyclables at Hocking Athens Perry Community Action in Glouster this week through Jan 4 at 3 Cardaras Drive. In Buchtel, bring recyclables to the village hall parking lot Saturday 8 am to noon. New Marshfield collection is Saturday 8 am to noon at the community center across from the post office. Items accepted at no charge include cardboard, newspaper, magazines, glass, aluminum and steel cans, plastics 1-7, and mixed office paper. For more information call (740) 797-4208.
