At Cape Canaveral two major tests ended in explosions as the Navy Polaris and the Air Force Thor rocket programs failed within minutes of launch. The Polaris veered off course and was destroyed after 90 seconds. the Thor also detonated after a similar short flight.

Greenup County Judge Arthur Sparks warned Joe Conn and Opal Conn not to leave their children unattended or face a grand jury probe. The couple were acquitted of wilful neglect in the death of Victoria Conn, 3, at their South Portsmouth home.
