Ohio lawmakers push to fund coal purchases and operations as state colleges brace for limited resources. The bill trims university appropriations by about 8.8 million dollars while debates center on transfers and emergency measures to sustain coal supplies through December. University officials warn of possible closures if funding gaps persist.
Genell, 13, dies at McMillin Hospital after an operation. Parents Edward and Arthur, and siblings Lucille and Louise, were with her as the family had recently moved to North Carolina. Further arrangements follow.

Judge O F Rowland in Athens County Common Pleas Court showed leniency toward Ralph Mike Slaughter and Thomas Coury two Athens gambling room proprietors. Each was fined 500 dollars with 450 dollars suspended and 50 dollars payable, plus costs, on the condition they not gamble in the county again. Both pleaded guilty to informations filed by Prosecuting Attorney Harold J Rose. The judge criticized recent city gambling conditions and noted the preexisting operation had continued with few interruptions.
Stanley McDonald of Athens pleaded guilty in Chauncey mayor's court to intoxication and concealed weapons after a Main St gun battle with Marshal Burke Witham. He was fined $5 and costs and bound over on two charges to the grand jury with $1,000 bonds each. Cris Stevens, also in Athens, also pled guilty to intoxication and was jailed for failure to pay fines.
Frank Pupsta a 57 year old alien faced a disorderly conduct charge after arriving in the United States five years ago and promptly going on relief. Judge Thomas Green fined him $100 and announced he would seek deportation.
Logan Ernest Kearns and his ten year old daughter Clarice were injured in an automobile crash near Enterprise early last week and left Cherryington Hospital Tuesday to stay with relatives in Hartford West Virginia. They were en route from Wyandott Michigan. Jack Carter of Mineral also recovered from injuries after an overturned car near Kimberly and returned home Monday.
Glen W. Mc Cabe, president of the Federation of Flat Glass Workers of America, said about 5,000 union members in eight cities would strike Wednesday if independent glass manufacturers fail to reach wage agreements. Affected cities include Ft. Smith Arkansas Okmulgee Oklahoma Sistersville Clarksburg West Virginia Fairchance Belle Vernon and Jeanette Pennsylvania.
Irvin Cobb argues that teachers and professors should be required to take an oath to defend the flag and uphold the government. He claims public servants must be loyal and questions allowing dissent by educators while defending free speech for students and funding for education.

The A E Hull Pottery Company of Crooksville offered Monday to compromise with 400 employees who struck two months ago. It would re open its plant soon if workers returned under conditions amounting to a five percent pay increase. The workers asked for ten percent and collective bargaining when they walked out.
Secretary Ickes announced a 1.515 million dollar Public Works Administration grant to Sandusky Ohio for a municipal electric plant distribution system expansion. The fund supports the erection and improvement of local utility infrastructure and related facilities.
Albert J Prignano a former associate of Al Capone and Illinois state legislator was shot by three men in Chicago as they forced him to surrender at his doorway. Six bullets struck his body and police hunt for the killers abandoning the robbery theory.
Chicago police question nine relatives in a hunt for three shooters who killed State Representative Albert J. Prignano at his home Sunday night. Officers target Sam Lapicola linked to the murderers and questioning related to a decrepit car. Further arrests and names surface as the probe continues.
The body of A. W. Lawson age 4, a Negro, was found in his Rendville shack by neighbors who broke in after he was missing since Christmas. He was frozen to death. Two cats in the shack were also found frozen. In Athens, word comes of the death of Emmett Scanion in Miami Florida on December 21. Mrs. Scanion is Ruth Cowen sister of Rev. Earl Cowen of Jerseyville and formerly attended Ohio University.
Washington observers weigh Massachusetts former governor Joseph B. Ely joining Alfred E. Smith as a 1936 Democratic rival to FDR. Ely, close to Smith since 1932, will attend the American Liberty League meeting January 25, where Smith is expected to attack the New Deal.
Rex Nagle and Ben Tipple were overcome by carbon monoxide fumes in Tippie's car while driving to Luhrig Mine. Nagle recovered in the cold air and managed to stop the vehicle and summon help. both were brought to Sheltering Arms Hospital where Tipple's condition improved by noon.
Deputies serving to summon January term grand jury found two entrants named Mrs. Ford Carpenter of W Second St and Mrs. Fred Carpenter of 8 Market St. They are not related.

Federal District Judge Albert L. Reeves ruled the Guffey Coal Law valid under constitutional taxing powers. The Associated Press reports an Italian air raid killed 32 Red Cross workers from a Swedish Ethiopian ambulance unit near Addis Ababa on the Southern African front. Italian forces claim progress as Ethiopians shift from guerrilla tactics to direct combat in a bid to halt a 550 mile advance.
The American Association of University Professors placed the University of Pittsburgh on an ineligible list over alleged insecurity of academic tenure targeting the current administration led by Chancellor John G Bowman. Athens water officials urge residents to drip taps at night to prevent frozen pipes amid cold weather. Okla ADA Mingo James, accused of stealing a new $12 overcoat, says he sold it to a Seminole truck driver as a second hand garment for $13.

Leo Hall sits in a Port Orchard cell awaiting sentencing for the 1934 Erlands Point mass murder. Miss Peggie Paulos, an accomplice in the robbery that preceded the slaughter of six, testified against Hall and was acquitted.
A blast of cold air sent temperatures plunging across Ohio to 16 below in parts. The Ohio River iced up for about 18 miles from Newport to Sistersville, with steel boats trying to break the jam. Engineers warned danger to low lands depended on water backing up as the ice began to break.
Miss Faith Wright of United Brethren Sunday School completed ten years with perfect attendance, the school’s longest record. William Durant, also of the same school, has eight years without a missed session. Wright and Durant are children of local families, with Wright from E Hunter Street and Durant from Fourth Street.
Charles A Lindbergh, wife Anne and son Jon landed in Liverpool aboard the American Importer after a rough transatlantic crossing. They went directly to the Adelphi Hotel for seclusion, with police escort and heavy media presence. Crew members denied rumors of seeking sanctuary for protection of their son, stating the flier did not want to be in America during Hauptmann's execution week.
Bruno Richard Hauptmann's defense team reported he is very encouraged about his appeal to avoid execution. His lawyers visited the Death House of New Jersey State Prison and said Hauptmann is in perfect physical condition with excellent morale.
