Cleveland December 31. State Prohibition Commissioner E G Matthews denied charges that double crossing by Barton caused his death. Barton, a former prohibition agent, shot himself in the Hotel Cleveland after writing a letter alleging a drinking party at Fort Hayes Hotel Columbus. The letter named several state officials and politicians, with the later portion withheld containing further names. Matthews said he would investigate substantiated charges but dismissed Barton's allegations as unproven claims.

YPSILANTI Mich Dec 31 U P Mapping of George Washingtons Tour to the Ohio in autumn 1770 was described by Dr Guy Harold Smith of Ohio Bias University at the Association of American Geographers meeting. The Washington Bicentennial Commission will publish an atlas with the map. Dr Smith said Washington used 31 camps with 22 locatable. The diary is the main source and some sites are only approximate. Washington reached Pt Pleasant at the Kanawha Ohio junction. six camps along the Ohio River are identifiable with probable locations others only guessed due to diary gaps.

New Athens County Officials Take Office Tomorrow for 2 Years
Officials across Athens, Nelsonville, Glouster and 14 townships prepare to begin new terms or take office tomorrow. Elected last November were mayors, council members, auditors, solicitors, treasurers, education board members, marshals, township trustees, clerks, justices of the peace and constables. In Athens Robert Wood starts a second term as mayor, J S Sherrard remains treasurer, Griffith Bivins becomes auditor, and Senne Erskine becomes city solicitor. Two new council members, Mrs. Fred Stauffer and C W Day, join council with C Hopkins as president. Other council members include Carl Beasley, J B Batley, Fred Frenzel, Bert Russell, and Sal Rowland. City appointments by Mayor Wood will include a safety director, civil service commission member, and health board member. Cornell will name a civil service commissioner for a six-year term as the term for the health board member expires. By law, appointments may not be made before January 11 or after February 1. Mayor Wood is expected to announce appointments soon after January 11. Connell will hold Friday morning meetings, elect a clerk, and appoint a president pro tem in the absence of the president. CG Harris is current clerk.
