Coal Industry Faces Structural Reform From Within
Washington December 2 The National Industrial Conference Board reports US coal faces stronger competition from other fuels and improved efficiency with its share dropping from 8 percent in 1913 to 2.72 percent in 1920. The board warns against federal control as a palliative and urges internal reconstruction to address chronic maladjustments. Signs of progress include 1665 companies eliminated since 1920, falling prices, fewer mines, longer work years and higher output per worker. The likely solution is fewer larger producers shaping the industry’s future.

Conference Board Sees Solution in Consolidation of Coal Industry
The Conference Board argues that excess productive capacity will be addressed by consolidation and modernization. Efficient producers must offer better prices and services to secure steady markets, enabling regular mining employment and steadier coal prices. Yet opportunistic operators lure markets during shortages, risking demoralization when demand falls.
