White House withholds summaries and transcripts on Watergate files

The White House will not release summaries or transcripts of presidential conversations as the Senate Watergate committee seeks broad access to files. A subpoena for about 500 tapes and numerous documents prompted the decision, aimed at not undermining Nixon’s fight against the subpoena. The Post reports that senior aides say material prepared could sway public opinion about the cover up, though not prove guilt.
