U S air raids continue in North Vietnam with 350 planes in action as Laird rejects plans to pause bombing. McGovern denounces escalation and warns POWs won t be released. Humphrey calls for total withdrawal while lawmakers press for a public address and possible investigation into the air war.
North and South Vietnam confront intensified air war as seven U S helicopters are shot down by Viet Cong forces 27 miles northwest of Saigon. U S crewmen wounded while casualties include five South Vietnamese and three enemy fighters.
Government lawyers sought a court order to remove 16 antiwar veterans who occupied the Statue of Liberty in a symbolic protest. The group rejected a compromise offer that would reopen the monument to visitors while letting the veterans stay to continue the protest. They flew an inverted flag and demanded the protest be publicized to U.S. troops, with similar actions at Betsy Ross House and a Travis Air Force Base ward. The events were linked to Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
The government reported a big trade deficit with exports totaling 3.16 billion dollars in November and imports at 3.39 billion.
