Volunteer Firefighter Burns in Attempted Rescue

A Shawnee elderly man, Philip J. Davis 71, died in a Walnut Street house fire. Volunteer Ottie Opperman suffered burn injuries while attempting to enter the burning home. Neighbors reported the blaze around 5 30 am and firemen found Davis in the dining room after extinguishing flames. Burial is set for Shawnee Cemetery with services Friday.

Well Known Ex Judge In Hocking Dies

Edgar L. Ewing longtime Logan resident and former probate and juvenile judge of Hocking County died Sunday night at age 78. A pharmacist at Athens Pharmacy he was found dead Monday morning at his home after returning from a Christmas visit with Mayor Myers. heart attack is suspected. Ewing served as probate judge from 1932 to 1948 and later worked as a pharmacist in Belpre Logan and Athens.
