The Associated Press reports 301 traffic deaths during the Christmas holiday period, with another 11 fatalities, including seven pedestrians, across the 48 to 30 hour window. Weather was mostly fair with snowstorms earlier in the week creating hazardous driving conditions. Ohio saw higher tolls than predicted, totaling at least 11 deaths in the 48 hour period.
Mrs Nina Pozdneev and family spent Christmas in Portsmouth as guests of Mr and Mrs James McKenzie and the city in an Operation Peace on Earth project. They return home Friday facing a long air ride and a busy postholiday period. A 40-year-old man remained in satisfactory condition one week after receiving baboon kidneys in Denver. The operation, performed by surgeons from US Veterans Hospital and Colorado Medical Center, was the first of its kind. In Cleveland, Dr Harry C. Oberholser 93, famed ornithologist with the Fish and Wildlife Service, died Wednesday after 46 years of service.
A 70 year old farmer shot at three jail escapees near Chillicothe, wounding James Shaw 24 in the face as they tried to steal a pickup. The other two escapees Wayne Smith 36 and Roland Wallace 35, both of Pikeville Kentucky, fled into a wooded area. Shaw is in Chillicothe Hospital with wounds. Authorities say Smith and Wallace face Kentucky jail breaking and concealed weapons charges and a hold order.
George M. Biddle 76 of Brewen was killed in a two vehicle crash at the U S 22 and Ohio 664 intersection seven miles east of Lancaster. Biddle was not wearing a seat belt. his wife sustained minor injuries along with two others in the second car. Gloria Vanderbilt has wed her fourth husband Wyatt Emory Cooper, a movie writer.
The magazine School Management reports the average cost per pupil for this school year is 552 dollars, up 17 dollars or 5 percent from last year. Only seven dollars of the rise funds better education. ten dollars offset inflation.
