In Madisonville Kentucky on December 24 Robert Springfield 17 a Black miner was killed and Roger Samuel 20 was seriously wounded when their motor truck was ambushed by white miners near the Trio Coat Company mine seven miles east of town. About 10 to 15 assailants fired on the group as they traveled to work. The Trio mine employing around 200 men had been protected by a federal injunction against discharged miners. this was its first major incident.
