In Lancaster Ohio the 114 year old Fairfield County jail was ruled unfit for juvenile confinement. The 5th District Court of Appeals ordered 14 year old Buddy Whittington of Baltimore moved to another facility after 78 days there on a delinquency charge.
Pope Paul VI said the world bishops synod will open its first session on Sept. 29 in Rome. He also announced two new Vatican agencies, one for laity and another to study poverty in developing nations. Cardinal Spellman arrived in Vietnam and visited a field hospital amid ongoing fighting near Saigon.
The road to Bethlehem opened at 6 a.m. today as Israeli and Jordanian officials signaled the start of the armsistice line crossing at Mandelbaum Gate. Pilgrims cross into Jordan for a three day stay in peaceful orderly conditions despite border tensions.
On the eve of a two day Christmas truce U S forces clashed with Communist units across land sea and air. The destroyer O Brien sustained two hits from North Vietnamese shore batteries with light casualties while U S Marines reported about 175 Communist deaths in the Hue area since Tuesday. B 52 bombers and carrier aircraft conducted raids in North and South Vietnam as fighting continued ahead of the pause.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower will spend Christmas in Walter Reed Army Hospital after the December 12 gall bladder operation. Spokesmen say he will remain for a “few more days” for medication adjustment and observation before returning to his Gettysburg farm.
In Washington the United States rejects Communist allegations that it bombed Hanoi civilian targets but a spokesman leaves open a chance of accidental action. In Cincinnati Common Pleas, Judge William R. Mathews allows the murder indictment of Posteal Laskey Jr., 29, over the August 14 killing of Barbara Bowman, a 31-year-old secretary.
General William C. Westmoreland, commander of U S forces in Vietnam, said in a Mutual Broadcasting System interview that next year should bring more of the same heavy fighting. He added there would be no dramatic turn of events and urged perseverance on and off the battlefield.
Athens County tax duplicate increases 8.3 percent following a reassessment study. The notice appears on page 13 of Inside Today and reflects municipal and regional fiscal changes affecting residents.
The State Department announced U S military aid to Jordan including an undisclosed number of F104 fighter bombers to bolster Jordan's defenses amid Middle East tensions. The timing followed Wasfi Tell's resignation as Jordan's premier, seen by many as connected to the El Samu attack. Israel warned it may buy more arms if the aid unsettles regional balance.
A Times Square crowd cheered as seven firemen trapped by a four-story collapse were pulled alive from burning wreckage. The sixth rescuer, face blackened and in smoking rags, saluted Fire Commissioner Robert C. Lowery and joked Merry Christmas. The commissioner returned the salute amid the cheers.
Hundreds of firemen and spectators cheered as the final trapped man was carried to an ambulance after being freed from a burned unoccupied building on 6th Avenue near 45th Street. The rescue followed hours of danger with collapsed floors pinning him and recalled the October 17 Madison Square tragedy where 12 firemen died.
In San Francisco, thieves breached the Bay View Community Center stealing hundreds of gifts meant for underprivileged children. Organizer Osceola Washington cried upon arrival as 500 kids awaited a festive program. Fire Department and U S Marines rushed more presents to save the event.
Senate Democratic leader Mike Mansfield warned that Thailand shows early Vietnam-like signals as U S troops increase to aid against rebels. He said advisers rather than combatants could drag the region into a drawn-out conflict with Laos and Cambodia at risk.
In Columbus, surgeons at Children’s Hospital performed a four hour kidney transplant from 9 year old Nancy Hancock, killed in a traffic accident, into 17 year old Alvin Alpop of East Liberty. Doctors called it potentially successful as the patient remained critically ill with nonfunctioning native kidneys.
In Washington the United States will ship India 906000 tons of wheat and sorghum for winter aid. The move follows Soviet donations and is labeled interim with Congress to hear future grain plans. The Soviet Union pledged 200000 tons of wheat to drought areas in India.
In Riverhead New York Supreme Court Justice David L Glickman allowed Laurinda an afternoon Christmas visit with her father over the mother’s Jehovah’s Witness objections. The child’s father Robert Hagen his wife Virginia and their two year old daughter plan to exchange gifts Sunday.
