Settlement motives for Marietta and Ohio Company lands
The Ohio Company's selection of the Muskingum mouth at Adelphia (Marietta) mixed strategic fort access and Indian pressure considerations with expected mineral wealth and river trade routes. Promoters debated sites like Zane’s influence and Muskingum versus Scioto Valley, foreseeing iron forges and mining and a growing population aided by coal, iron, and salt resources.
