Saigon reports three more B52 bombers lost with 12 crewmen missing as heavy raids target Hanoi Haiphong. Two B52s shot down this morning, one damaged Wednesday night. Viet Cong to observe 24 hour cease fires for Christmas and New Year in South Vietnam.
At O Hare Airport two airliners collided in fog killing nine people. North Central Airlines DC9 had 45 aboard and Delta Convair 880 carried 86 passengers plus seven crew. The crash halted operations. 13 North Central passengers were hospitalized and 19 others were uninjured.
Gregory said he grabbed the 13 year old’s hand and crawled from the plane as smoke filled the cabin. They reached the front, kept low for air, then ran as the jet burst into flames. FAA and NTSB sent teams to investigate.
Nixon warned Thieu he would cut all military and economic aid if Thieu rejects the peace terms Washington expects Hanoi to accept. He urged Thieu to join in signing a forthcoming agreement while Kissinger called a settlement nearly complete. Victims include David Young Jr. 31 and his son Raymond 15, Connie Gregory 23, Charles Ross 29, and injured David Young Sr. 66 his wife Eliza 68 and granddaughter Wanda Byrd 4. Police suspect a narcotics dispute but have not determined its nature.
Communists from Hanoi and the Viet Cong walk out of the Vietnam peace talks in Paris to protest U S bombing of North Vietnam. Nguyen Minh Vy and Dinh Ba Thi read statements denouncing Nixon escalation and left before replies could be given.
U S officials report Hanoi is stalling Paris negotiations to bolster its bargaining position. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho have not set a new meeting date as Haig returns from Southeast Asia. Nixon warned both Hanoi and Saigon of continued bombing and aid cuts, while Saigon officials claim an ultimatum exists.
Senate Democratic and Republican leaders forecast new antiwar legislation if Nixon fails to end the war. House and Senate leaders contend only broad public pressure can push peace, while Mansfield urges return to the October 26 peace framework as a goal this year.
