The derailment blamed on rain weakened roadbed occurred after midnight as the St Louis to New Orleans service neared Belleville across the Mississippi River.
President Eisenhower planned to greet about 600 White House staff in the East Room as part of the annual Christmas celebration. The greeting, shared with Mrs. Eisenhower, extended his holiday wish to people at the White House, in the nation, and around the world.
Final accounting shows Millicent Hearst receives 1.5 million plus 4.8 million trust funds for five sons George William Randolph John Randolph and the twins Randolph and David. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation gets 43.7 million for charity. Executors paid 3.11 million in federal taxes and 618,990 in state inheritance taxes. Hearst died August 14 1951 at 88.
