Reports say Java operations expanded with Dutch forces capturing Jogjakarta and key ports while Indonesia pleads for UN cease fire. Soekarno and top officials are reportedly in Dutch custody as clashes mount across Java and Sumatra.
Three escaped convicts who returned to Ohio prisons voluntarily will be released as free men for Christmas. Gov. Thomas J. Herbert commuted their sentences effective tomorrow, praising their rehabilitation. Mel Shane of Detroit, William H. Bucksburg of Pittsburgh, and William Smith of Zanesville had long histories of escape and new terms, now set to go home after breakfast.
A man on convalescent leave from Manhattan State Hospital drew a knife aboard a Greyhound at Chillicothe and slashed two passengers before being subdued. Charles Morton, 20, received a two inch scalp wound. William Harris, 16, was cut on the ear. The driver and a Marine stopped the assault and police took the assailant into custody. Morton and Harris were treated and released from Veterans Hospital.
Gen Douglas MacArthur says he has no plan to return to the United States and will remain in Japan to finish the work there. An allied headquarters official told the AP there is no truth to reports that he had communicated with President Truman about when to return home.
A fire at the Westminster Hotel in Philadelphia killed two guests and injured three others. Ninety five residents escaped after a guest raised the alarm on the second floor. The hotel, a former three dwellings, stands near the Schuylkill River and the B and O station. Names of the victims were not available immediately.

Los Angeles jury ruled that Patricia Styles killed herself after a shooting on December 13 in North Hollywood. The 25 year old actress, daughter of radio producer Hal Styles, died in a flurry of gunfire, and the verdict upsets her father's hope for a different finding.
