Northwest coal famine blamed on car shortage
Local company representatives cited insufficient rail cars and motive power to move stored coal from docks at the lakehead. They noted a record Ohio shipment last season and ongoing storage, with North Dakota districts like Maddock Finley and Grand Fork suffering heatless schools and mills as coal runs low. John H. Winder of Sunday Creek and William K. Field of New Pittsburg Coal attributed the crisis to transport bottlenecks, stating large coal volumes were moved earlier but no further shipments will occur until spring.
