National Grange Endorses Wide Range of Reforms at Winston-Salem
At the National Grange convention in Winston-Salem in November the group urged transfer of the Bureau of Irrigation to the Agriculture Department, reduced railroad rates, expanded inland waterways, tariff protections for fats and oils, entry into the World Court, truth-in-fabric laws, and disarmament steps. It backed vocational agriculture in schools, tax exemptions for farm electricity, restrictions on war munitions sales, universal alien registration and federal poll taxes, stock sale controls, old age insurance study, and American cotton bagging, among many other measures. It also called for education in schools about alcohol and narcotics, road tree planting, farm group cooperation, a broad sales tax, repeal of Prohibition, a national department of education, advance veterans’ bonds payments, possible debt relief for WW nations, immigration policy changes, rerouting gasoline tax funds, limits on corporate farming, reduced Land-Grant funding, and bans on using farm products as price leaders and on advertising in schools.
