The Nixon administration replaced Democrats with GOP appointees in about 2150 posts, 94 percent of which are held by Republicans. Several holdovers remain in lower level jobs. Critics say safe career posts were abolished for new appointees, while White House officials call progress satisfactory.
Washington AP reports the House Senate conference committee plans to drop about nine Senate provisions while preserving others, aiming to finish by tonight. Key items under debate include a $325 college expense credit and various deductions, with notable opposition from Nixon on Social Security boosts and import quotas. The panel, led by Sen. Long and Rep. Mills, works through long sessions to seal final reform measures.
A 20 year old Navy man from Minersville Route 1, William Denver Tuttle, died in a one car crash on County Road 32 near the Earl Frecker farm. He drowned after the car hit a bridge abutment and overturned into a creek. His father Glen Tuttle found the wreck as the sailor was to report for duty in Hawaii.
WAVERLY Ohio reports a private plane crashed into a hill in southern Pike County killing five people. Victims include Glenda Barnes 24 Michael Gibson 27 and Donald H Martin all of Cincinnati pilot David E Weidner 42 from Mount Carmel and Billy Hinson 13 from Arington Texas. Paris talks continue with North Vietnam’s chief negotiator boycotting for a second week and the U S saying there is nothing to be gained by delay.
Charles Manson, 35, facing murder conspiracy charges in seven slayings, asked Wednesday to act as his own attorney in Los Angeles. Superior Court Judge William B. Keene said he would consider the request.
AP reports that U S battlefield deaths in Vietnam are projected to top 40000 by January 1 if trends hold. Last week 85 Americans were killed in action, raising total since 1961 to 39827, with 836 wounded. South Vietnamese losses and enemy kills are also detailed.
A Columbus jury found five policemen and a numbers game racketeer innocent of all counts after two days of deliberation. The panel reported about 9:30 a.m. in U.S. District Court with Judge Joseph P. Kinneary urging retrial if needed. Named defendants were Frank Baldasarro Captain Jerry G. Ryan Captain Robert C. Taylor Lt. William Voorhis and Patrolmen Gary Roach and Robert Brodt.
Police raided a midcity motel room during a stag party and arrested 14 people, including Edward A. Haggerty Jr., the judge who presided over the Clay Shaw trial. Haggerty faces charges of soliciting for prostitution, obscenity, resisting arrest, and four counts of assaulting a policeman.
Newark Mayor Hugh J. Addonizio pledged business as usual after a federal grand jury indicted him for extortion and tax evasion linked to Construct Inc. demands for his removal were rejected by Gov. Hughes, who cited New Jersey law. The indictment accuses extortion of 253000 dollars from the engineering contractor on sewer and urban renewal city projects.
Cincinnati former congressman John J. Gilligan announces his candidacy in the May Democratic primary for Ohio governor. He joins fellow contenders Robert E. Hagan and Robert Sweeney in the field. Gilligan served on Cincinnati council, a brief U.S. House term, and previously ran for U.S. Senate.
