House Rejects End The War Amendment In Foreign Aid Row

The House rejected an end the war amendment and cleared the way to adjourn. The Senate planned to quit until Jan 18 after approving a 2.752 billion dollar foreign aid authorization and a funding measure. William F. Ryan moved to force a new House vote to require total U S withdrawal from Indochina within six months.

Senate Conferees Drop Mansfield Amendment After Vote

The adjournment committee killed Ryan's motion 130 to 101 causing Senate conferees to drop demand for a yes or no vote on the Mansfield amendment. The foreign aid conference met after 13 days and Fulbright called Mansfield the closest direct vote possible. The Mansfield amendment thus passes the Senate for the third time this year but fails to become law.

Edd and Margaret Hollen of Bear Branch Kentucky in Clay County were married 82 years seven months and ten days and may hold a world record for the longest marriage. Edd is 105 and Margaret is his wife with a long shared life.

Long-married Kentucky couple marks 82 years of marriage

Gray, aged 99, and her husband Edd wed in the Kentucky mountains on May 7 1889. Guinness World Records cites a prior 82 year one day union. She died June 22 1965. They have 38 grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren.
