After a five hour deliberation a Meigs County jury convicted Ralph E. Ross of second degree murder in the August 21 shotgun slaying of his wife Charlotte at their Dorcas home. Sentencing set for today. possible appeal noted.
A custodian at Wrightstown Christian Church died from fuel oil and gasoline explosion while lighting two stoves before services. Glenn Aaron Ball, 46, Amesville Route 1, was found burned near the church after an 8:47 a.m. blast interrupted the morning. He rolled on the ground to douse flames, but perished before rescue. Ball was a farmer and limestone quarry operator, survived by his wife Eloise Smith Ball and mother Florence Hogsett Ball, with three sons and a brother. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Chesterhill.
President Johnson urges Congress to reverse deep reductions in foreign aid as the House debates allocations totaling 2.8015 billion dollars within a 4.4509 billion dollar measure. Adlai Stevenson blasts a separate cut to UN programs, warning of harm to U.S. prestige and aid for refugees and children.
Paris report says President Johnson told NATO ministers the United States will maintain its European troop strength as long as needed. The frozen body of Harry Smith, 63, of Mason, was found behind the Gibbs home by his son in law Franklin Johnson. Coroner Dr Oliver Eschenaur ruled death from exposure with a pelvis fracture as a contributing factor. Smith had been drinking with Delmer and Albert Gibbs and apparently fell on back steps around 8 p.m. Saturday. police and sheriffs questioned the Gibbs men after an investigation.
Two fires caused over 125000 damage in Marysville on Sunday. The Dinner Bell Restaurant burned after about seven hours of firefighting by Marysville and five other communities. A nearby building housing the Tiajuana Club suffered extensive upstairs fire damage. no injuries were reported. It was unclear if the blazes were connected.
Jerry J. Walsh 41, a former Columbus athlete who battled rheumatoid arthritis, was named Handicapped American of the Year by the President's Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped. Now a New York City educational consultant, Walsh travels nationwide, founded Courage Incorporated, and has logged about 638000 miles in 69 cities this year to promote arthritis research and a cure.
