The cold wave brings intense suffering across the Midwest with temperatures plunging to eight degrees below zero in the region and as low as twenty below in some central states. Deaths and exposure rise as forecasts predict two to three more days of severe cold across the United States and Canada.
Springfield reports Ohio State Grange adopts resolutions at its annual convention. The measures call for enforcing liquor laws, reducing postal rates, boosting rural police, centralizing welfare work, lowering legal interest, reforming real estate values, abolishing road assessments with petitions, readjusting state funds to townships, supporting a selective sales tax, taxing billboards outside towns, lowering teacher salaries, retaining quail on the songbird list, and enforcing stream pollution laws.
Washington Del. 14. The House Ways and Means Committee approved 3.2 percent beer legalization and turned to a measure to permit natural wine production. An executive session was expected to produce a decision soon. Democrats anticipated a favorable report though House reception on wines up to 14 percent alcohol remained uncertain.
In Columbus on December 16 1911 manufacturers merchants and bankers heard T W Williams of Washington state say the Reconstruction Finance Corporation stands ready to provide substantial financial aid to Ohio building and loan associations if requested. James Neal son of Mr and Mrs Howard Neal Gallipolis was held up and his automobile stolen Thursday night near the Bane Filling Station on Route 7. Deputy Wood and Patrolman Cooper recovered a roadster nearby and towed it into Gallipolis. it bore a Lawrence County license and was believed stolen with the driver fleeing.
Harry Hughes 37 in Martins FerryHospital with injuries after fatally slashing wife in barn on New Athena farm. Police say motive linked to personal safety concerns. He was taken into custody today.
Athens County Auditor Clyde Edmundson proceeds with second half tax distributions to school districts and other subdivisions, despite lacking state approval. He previously acted in July pending attorney general guidance, with tangible receipts at 25,775.32 and intangible 15,924.56 for the second half, and 23,172.57 and 22,913. from the first half. The total yearly tangible is 88,000, intangible 4,238.21, and Athens County’s 1932 intangible share under the new fund method totals 82,340.47 based on 1930 data.

Mrs Theodosia McCutcheon age 71 was struck by eastbound Baltimore and Ohio train No 4 at Race Street crossing shortly after 1 am. Coroner Jones said bells functioned but crew unaware of the accident. witnesses Joe Bobo and Ralph Potchen were to be questioned. The body was taken for funeral arrangements.
Robert Nutert Burns, a Georgia chain gang fugitive, won a delay to a formal extradition hearing in Newark New Jersey after Civil Liberties League and Vanguard Press offered free counsel. Burns, WW veteran author of I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang, protested return to Georgia. He had lived openly in East Orange and faced a 8M holdup sentence.
