Fire consumes C. J. Martin dairy barns and granary

Early Saturday morning a blaze destroyed the barns and granary at C. J. Martin’s dairy farm east of town near Barth’s mill. The total loss is about 3500 with 2500 insured. most livestock perished though a few hogs and some wagons survived. The origin remains unknown, though a tramp in the barn overnight is suspected.

Deaths at the Hospital

John N. Jones aged 70 died at the state hospital Sunday from cerebral hemorrhages. A prominent Jackson resident, his remains were sent there on Monday for burial. Mary Curry wife of F. M. Curry of Somerset died at the state hospital Sunday of exhaustion. Her body was prepared for burial and sent to Somerset on Monday.

Glouster Light Plant Criticized For Poor Service

In Glouster on December 13, the municipal electric plant faced council disputes over its installation. The company claims constant operation prevents issues, while recent outages and delayed lighting left merchants and residents in the dark and caused injuries to engineer John S. Morris of Columbus.

Former Athenian Passes Away

W. A. Johnson formerly of Athens died in Cincinnati on Saturday from Phthisis at age 45. He was the son of Mrs. Mary K. Johnson of Franklin street. His body was brought to Athens with Mrs. Edna Wolf of Cincinnati. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday at two o clock with Dr. King delivering the sermon.

Passing of a Good Man Cyrus Rose

Cyrus Rose a saddler and harness maker with fifty years of service in Athens died after weeks of illness at his son in law W B Lawrence’s home. He was a Methodist lay preacher, active in charity, born February 4 1831 in Waterloo New York and later settled on Court Street Athens. He married Cornelia Reed in 1858. four of six children survived him. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 in the church.

First Coal Over Tipple at Continental Mine No 209

Friday marked the first coal run over the steel tipple at Continental mine No. 209 on the Coulson farm Sugar Creek near Athens. Sugar Creek Coal and Mining Co. expanded with two additional shafts near Hocking Valley Oil land and a third on F. L. Janod farm, aiming for 1,000,000 tons annually and about 1,500 workers across five mines in the Athens area.

Athens to Build Modern Fire Department and Jail Annex

Athens council approved plans for a new fire department building on Court street ground behind the Lawrence offices. The structure will be 32.5 by 60 feet with a lower fire bay, two stalls, hose tower, wash table, a lockup with six cells, and a second floor six room flat with bath for janitor and offices. Contracts awarded soon, with work starting then and summer completion.
