The USS Sanctuary hosted a one day shakedown with 40 women among 480 men as part of a Naval pilot program to place women in noncombat sea duties. A Fourth District Court of Appeals opinion by Judge Gordon Grey upholds the 1971 convictions of Wayne Dean Owens Caroline Owens and John Sycob for possession of marijuana. An off duty Athens firefighter saw possible marijuana during a fire call at the Rock Riffle Road home prompting a deputy to arrest the trio. Each was fined 500 dollars and given 90 days in jail with 60 days suspended if law abiding for two years.
