Baltimore AP report on the American Farm Bureau Federation convention where delegates argued over changes to New Deal crop programs. Proposals favored include parity pricing with stronger marketing control, funding benefit payments via processing taxes, or preserving the current system with quotas and loans.
Chicago report shows U S meat production in November at a record volume 1 451 785 000 pounds up 13 percent from a year ago Pork and lard totaled 904 940 000 pounds Hog slaughter 5 418 844 head highest for any month since January 1929 and the most for November on record Through 11 months total slaughter 44 334 500 head the largest for any partial year since 1933 and the greatest for any similar period since 1924.
The Federal Crop Insurance Corporation announced payments of about 22 million bushels in wheat indemnities and about 15 million bushels in premiums for this year. Of 378,966 contract holders, 112,415 filed loss claims. Manager Leroy K. Smith cited unusually large abandonments in Nebraska Kansas Texas and Oklahoma.
In Salisbury Maryland the English bulldog Raleigh owned by Dr. Vernon W Richards loses a tooth and gains a gold replacement crafted by the family dentist. The article notes Raleighs gleaming grin and the owner remarks on the unusual dental upgrade.
In Aurora Nebraska Tobe Catlett bought a chest of drawers for 40 cents. On the way home a drawer opened and an envelope containing 165 dollars fell out. The story notes the find was kept as a possible windfall from the sale.

State Welfare Director Charles L Sherwood sought an irreducible minimum relief figure and a uniform yardstick for measuring needs. He also forecast 1940 relief costs at least 500 000 below last year and a possible year end balance in the relief fund.
Ohio youths in the Civilian Conservation Corps will receive bank accounts arranged by State Welfare Director Charles L. Sherwood. Enrollees must deposit 7 of their 30 monthly allowance, 15 sent to families, and 8 kept as personal spending money, aligning with a new federal rule that shifts funds from 22 homeward.

Lord Lothian, British ambassador to the United States, died early today of uremic infection. He had represented Britain since four days before war was declared, arriving in August 1939 for his fifteenth U.S. visit and serving as Rhodes Trust secretary. He once urged an Anglo German pact and later favored powerBased action against Hitler and Mussolini. He had just returned from London and warned of Britain’s strained finances.
The Ohio State Grange closes its 1940 sessions in Cleveland with reinstalled officers except one. Walter F. Kirk of Port Clinton is reelected master for a tenth two year term. Mrs. L. P. Auck of Bucyrus is new as lady assistant steward. Mrs. Freda Kennedy of Meigs County named Pomona. Arlie Bremmer of Hocking County receives a bronze medal. O. Cadiz Ohio reports a state inquiry into 31 miners killed by an explosion. Superintendent Harvey J Nelms testified that a pre blast mine check found no gas, done by fire boss William Ramsey and later by inspector John W Harris who found explosive gas. Harris argued Ohio mining laws lack teeth to close unsafe mines and urged a second air shaft before reopening.
The Dutch destroyer Van Kinsbergen seized the 6,031-ton German freighter Rhein after it left Tampico and tried to scuttle to thwart capture. The move marks Netherlands warships operating with Britain in Western waters, with reports that the crew may have set the ship afire.
Mrs Gertrude Virginia Lewis files a breach of promise suit for 25000 dollars against Captain John W Lane a Mason County farmer and Galli polis ferry operator. Circuit Clerk Vernon Jones notes it as Mason history first of its kind. Lewis formerly ran a Milton restaurant and says Lane promised marriage on July 13.
James A. Farley former postmaster general of the United States was elected today to the board of the New York Central Railroad to fill a vacancy.
In Seattle jurors wept in court while Frank Kombol 36 pleaded with his own lawyer for acquittal on a second degree burglary charge. The jury then convicted.
The Duke of Windsor, age 46, underwent a medical checkup in Miami Beach while his wife recovered from tooth extraction. Doctors announced he was in excellent general health and physical condition, noting a youthful, almost boyish appearance.
Col. R. C. Candee calls the Martin B-26 faster than most pursuit planes in Europe after inspecting the new medium bomber at Glenn L. Martin plant in Baltimore. He notes unofficial reports rate its speed at 400 miles an hour or more.
Delbert D. Adams aged 19 volunteered to help fight a blaze at Gravel Bank when a 6,900 volt wire fell on him causing fatal electrocution. The Cedar Crest dairy barn of M. W. Bart mess was destroyed along with six cattle, two cars and farm equipment.
Mrs. Sue Howard aged 52, wife of Rev. Clinton L. Johnson, president of the Columbus Ministerial Association and pastor of the Wilson Avenue Church of Christ, has died.
Federal Grand Jury charges Ivan C. Phillips and Elmer A. Whitt with attempting to rob the First National Bank of Gallipolis last May 17. Both men already serve life and 20 year sentences for other bank robberies. Indictments also name numerous alcohol law violations and related offenses across several towns.
State workers razed the Old Pomeroy Opera House on Thursday under an order from State Fire Marshal Ray R. Gill. First Assistant Bucklew and Assistant AG Hall led the operation with traffic control by state patrols. The owner J E Lyons had challenged the order, but the Ohio Supreme Court upheld the marshal.
Greenwich resident Joseph Spell a 31 year old Negro chauffeur admitted attacking Mrs. John K. Strubing Jr. in her mansion three times and later hurling her into Kinseyco Reservoir after binding her feet. FBI agents probed possible kidnapping as investigators questioned Spell after his arraignment on a rape charge.
Anthony Wippel age 63 died this morning at his Chester Road home after a long illness. Survived by wife, two children Dale Wippel and Mrs. Helen Atkins of Pomeroy, three sisters Katharine Forsythe Elizabeth Wippel and Clara Matson, four brothers John Phillip Mike all of Chester Road and Jacob of Shade.

Prime Minister Churchill told the House of Commons the bulk of forces, potentially 42,000 to 51,000 men, might be trapped.
