O Hara Captured After Lottery Fraud Ring Exposure

W W O Hara alias J R Simms was arrested at Hotel Berry by Post Office Inspector J F Oldfield and Officer A P Linscott on charges of using the mails for a fraudulent lottery. He allegedly ran a scheme from Cincinnati, bilking veterans of pensions, with victims nationwide. Oldfield tracked him for months, leading to the arrest as he prepared for a Columbus penitentiary case.

Hobo Steals Watch and Is Bound for Court

Charles Russell, a hobo, was arrested Saturday night by Marshall Finsterwald and Officer Linscott for stealing a gold watch from Julian Gift’s residence four miles southwest of Athens. Gift noted the burglary, tracked the suspect to the Ohio Central railroad, and Russell was jailed after a Monday hearing before Mayor Logan.

Knife Stabbing Leads to Charge Against Local Man

William Schoonover of Labrig was arrested and brought before Mayor Logan on a charge of cutting to kill after a Wednesday night clash with Joseph Walker at Luhrig. Walker was stabbed in the back and required many stitches but is recovering. Schoonover claims self defense and was bound over to court on bond. Both men worked at Luhrig mines. Schoonover formerly lived in Chauncey.

Week in Common Pleas Court Ends Long Term

The November term of the common pleas court nears its close with most major cases disposed or continued. Four penitentiary sentences were imposed as jurors were discharged after a three week session. Several divorce actions and criminal indictments were resolved or moved forward, including guilty pleas and alimony rulings.
