In Detroit the United Auto Workers move to press Chrysler after securing Ford’s ratification vote. Ford's contract requires rank and file approval, while UAW aims for a national settlement by late next week. The shift follows a 180 to 3 Ford council endorsement.
The House Commerce Committee approved a bill to delay a nationwide railroad strike to March 1 by a 19 14 vote. Chairman Staggers expressed doubt it will avert the walkout while union leader Dennis indicated support for a delay only if immediate 13.5 percent raises are included. President Nixon faces stiff resistance to wage terms from unions and administration officials.
The House voted 213 to 174 to restore at least part of the Senate defeat on continuing SST development. A conference committee will seek a smaller sum than 290 million while opponents warn of environmental harm and long-term costs. If funds are restored in any form, it keeps the 1800 mph jet program alive with first test flights targeted for 1973 and commercial service by 1980.
Washington officials near a decision on trimming an Army division next year. Indications point to preserving current numbers, possibly avoiding a cut that would reduce total divisions to 12 and two thirds, the lowest in 26 years. Final budget requests to Congress are being prepared as Defense and Budget officials finalize details for Nixon’s plan.
At Fort Benning the Calley court martial moves toward the defense. after 35th witness the prosecution rests conditionally while the defense prepares to present statements from Vietnamese witnesses and plans to call its first witness Thursday morning. The panel is idle for the day.

Brieze testified before a House subcommittee that the Coast Guard allowed Simas Kudirka a Lithianian seaman to be returned to a Soviet ship, either unconscious or dead, after urging actions to save him. He said an order from Boston overruled a call to the State Department Baltic Affairs desk.
Gov elect John Gilligan spoke after a Kent State University trip noting campus tension and bitterness but a hopeful tone among students and faculty. He met with Kent State students faculty and community leaders and held a private meeting with President Robert White.
Opponents of expanding U.S. involvement in Cambodia push to reoffer the Cooper Church amendment limiting presidential use of forces. The measure aims to slow Nixon’s 255 million dollar Cambodia aid package and echo Senate opposition after a related ground forces ban.
