Story of Turtles Told in Pictures at West Side School

A second grade student assembly at West Side School featured a moving picture story of two pet turtles, Roly and Poly. Crayon drawings created by boys and girls depicted incidents from the turtles’ lives, rolled on a mechanism for unwinding to reveal a complete scene. The show followed Roly’s arrival to Miss Irma Johnson, a school box for transport, and Poly’s arrival after another turtle was found. The class fed the pets worms and insects, observed their winter hibernation, and prepared a dirt-filled “House” painted green with black turtle decorations, where the animals settled in for the season.
